Accordingly, it has been proposed that ward numbers four and ten, will each be split into two wards each giving the requisite additional two wards. The MMC chairperson, Mr Sandeep Falari said that ward numbers four and ten were decided upon due to their large populations and large geographical spreads. The MMC resolution, taken at yesterday's ordinary council meeting, follows a circular by the directorate of municipal administration (DMA) asking all the municipal councils in Goa whether they feel the need to increase the number of wards in their respective jurisdictions in view of the municipal elections scheduled for October 2005. Mr Falari said that according to the stipulations, a B class municipality like Mapusa can have a maximum of 15 wards. He said a B class municipality can have 10 wards for a population of up to 15,000. Beyond 15,000, for every 5000 people and additional ward can be created. Considering that Mapusa presently has a total population of over 40,000, there is scope for increase in number of wards.
