PWD launches drive to identify illegal water connections

With Goans awaiting the rains, which has been delayed
for a week, the public works department (PWD water division)
has launched a drive to identify the illegal water connections
in Goa.
Besides, the PWD has plans to replace modern meters
replacing the old ones in major towns before starting its
24x7 scheme into operation.
Official sources said that during the drive, the PWD team
found that out of 1,200 water connections in Chorao island,
75 were found to be illegal. A senior official said that many
people are taking such illegal connections and the state was
loosing revenue. The department has decided to take action
against such erring people, he said.
In view of several faults in the water distribution system
nearly 34 per cent of water goes waste and the state has
to face revenue losses of Rs 17-crore.
During the inspection drive the officials noticed that some
people had diverted water by taking illegal connection from
the main pipeline. Besides, the department has also found
that some people who took the water connection for domestic
purpose are using it for commercial purpose.
Likewise, the department has also found that many old meters
in houses had either stopped or are not giving reading properly.
However, the department has plans to replace the old meters
in the main towns, while starting the 24x7 scheme.
The senior official said that nearly 29,000 meters are not
functioning, of which 28504 were domestic, 716 commercial
and 62 industrial connections.
