Thermocol and mosquito menace

I was reading the "TIC" (Tongue in Cheek) by Cecil
Pinto and the word 'Thermocol' hit me that I thought
of sharing something about it. This may be helpful to
many.

POLYSTYRENE is the correct name. The word or term
Thermocol does not exist or may be a brand in India
some time probably derived from Thermos. Styrofoam is
the trade name for the same owned by Dow Chemical
Company in the USA and as a very popular brand just
like we have Cadbury and Colgate. Styrene is a
petroleum by-product, is the primary raw material from
which polystyrene is made.

Polystyrene foam products are 95 percent air and only
five percent polystyrene. For those who like to know
more on the same visit http://www.polystyrene.org/
Anyway it will always be called Thermocol in India.
You also get crockery items made of it besides
packing. AND most popular of all is the Confetti
balls, in various colors that get into the centre
piece at every reception.

The other close cousin is PUF - Poly Urethane Foam.
Most thermo ware use it including our refrigerators.
Remember Godrej made big banners about using it!

So, to cut it short and not deluge into the Science of
it, I must say that it is a wonderful and a very cheep
product that can keep away breading mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Goa has a lot of
houses that have their own septic tanks and breed
mosquitoes a plenty. The best way to get rid of them
is get rid of all the oxygen in the stagnant water.

Here is how it can be done

Take white polystyrene (thermocol) confetti balls in a
large dish, add equal amount of water and heat it till
the water boils. The balls will grow a little larger
in size. Continue boiling till you see that they
cannot grow bigger. Pour the contents over the
stagnant water. This must form a cover over the water
that is at least an (1) inch over the water.

And good bye Mosquitoes. And thank you Discovery
channel!
