Macs, or makapaos -- the almost derogatory term that Christians are sometimes referred to in Mumbai (Bombay) -- have long played a fairly prominent role in India's advertising industry. I came across this reference to a young lady, who is probable from what is referred to the GEMS community (Goan-East Indian-Mangalorean), and just thought of circulating it... FN Client Comes First: Tanuja Dias Leo Burnett, Mumbai “I am a commercial writer. I'll provide the solution the way the client wants it,” says a client-focused Tanuja Dias, even at the risk of sounding a bit like a suit. The focus is partly explainable: advertising was a survival issue for her. The 27-year-old commerce graduate fled accountancy, straight into anything that would offer respite. She tried odd jobs like writing greeting cards and editing a technical magazine before she landed at McCann in mid-2001. There's been no looking back since. Marked as a star at Leo Burnett - which she joined towards the end of 2003 - her work is being monitored by the agency's worldwide creative director, reveals KV Sridhar, Burnett's NCD. “I better be good; I don't have an option,” says the lady who's credited with the original version of McDonald's 'What your bahana is?' campaign. Radio spots for Koshish - School for the Hearing Impaired, co-written by Kainaz Karmakar, won her a RAPA award, and a gold and silver at the Radio Mirchi Kaan awards. Add to that a silver Abby for her work at McCann for UTI Bank. The agency environment, she says, gives her a much-needed space: “I can be what I want to be.”
