MEMBERS of an Indian business delegation to China , who were there on behalf
of a leading industry chamber of the country, were , during a sightseeing
tour of Beijing , visibly impressed by the many state-of-the art flyovers
that crisscross the forbidden city. The delegation's leader , who couldn't
stop marvelling at the high level of infrastructure development in China ,
was cut short by his local cab driver , who informed him , rather matter of
factly: "My mother , along with hundred other families used to stay at the
very spot under the flyover. They were given a day's notice before the whole
place was razed to the ground." Needless to say , it suitably dampened the
delegation's feel-good spirit.
