7th Speak Konkani Teach Konkani programme held at Ghatkoper

"Kannada script can not be accepted as a universal script for Konkani
as it is not popular outside Karnataka. Devnagiri script has the
potential to unite all Konkani people at least at the national level.
But it is sad that our people have not accepted it for Konkani even
after trying for so many years. Now for the survival of Konkani the
only option we have is Roman script that could be also used at the
International level. People should come forward to make extensive use
of this script for Konkani so that the language may be promoted to our
next generation." said Rev. Dr. Pratap Naik S.J., director of Thomas
Stephen Konkani Kendr Goa.

He was speaking during the occasion of 7th "Speak Konkani Teach
Konkani" programme organised by Maharashtra Konkan Association at
Ghatkoper on 30th of June.

"Hindus in Goa speak Konkani but do not make us of it for reading and
writing. Goan Christians hesitate to speak their own Mother Tongue.
The current writing method in Roman script used in Goa has some
errors that also have changed their actual Konkani pronunciation. Now
this new script is scientifically prepared so that almost all Konkani
sounds are represented. This new writing method is so simple,
user-friendly and also powerful that some of the sounds that could not
be represented in Kannada or Devnagiri script can be also represented
in Roman script using this new method." he further said with examples.
