The Goa Legislative Assembly should have taken a
second to adopt a unanimous resolution to thank Goa's
distinguished Governor SC Jamir for ably having
handled Goa's mess with the expert assistance of Chief
Secretary Kiran Dhingra while Goa's elected
Representatives engaged in political chess at
tax-payers expense.
Governor Jamir was very good tonic for Goa. He brought
some dignity and esteem to Raj Bhavan which was to a
large extent degraded by his predecessor, the
"homeless" and "shelter less" Kidar Nath Sahani.
Governor Jamir reached out to remote parts of Goa to
get a feel of the common man's problems and resolve
them as far as possible. He has to be credited for
ably governing Goa except for the erroneous decision
to suspend a sincere and dynamic Goan officer,
Director of Tourism Elvis Gomes. Perhaps the Governor
was misled and misinformed and this is one probable
error Governor Jamir has to be forgiven for.
In my interactions with S.C.Jamir I have found him to
be a good and honest listener, a seasoned
administrator, a down to earth caring person and very
firm in his decisions.
In the not so distant past Goa's then Governor Gen
Jacob had also outstandingly governed Goa during that
spell of President's rule.
Goa could have had another few months if not years of
able stewardship of S.C Jamir but in a democracy the
elected Representatives have to rule regardless of the
price the grieving voters have to pay.
Ribandar has the prestigious Goa Institute of
Management but few of us in Goa know that there exists
an underground Goan Institute of Mismanagement where
most of our MLAs have graduated from. Our MLAs know
that as long as all Goa's problems are not solved they
are in business. They have even post graduated to
circumvent the anti-defection law. We may be India's
smallest and youngest state but we are showing the
ageing states the art of political instability.
Goa is no longer politically virgin but just needs
not more than 20 MLAs and a mere four Ministers. Scrap
the idle Zilla Parishads and empower the village
panchayats. Lay to eternal rest the PDAs which have
been a hot den for corruption. Who is really ready to
make sacrifices? Political bankruptcy. Goa style. Sky
is the limit.
