why is there ever a need to mention it?

Dear Viviana,

According to Frederick Noronha, who is very interested in such things, caste can be ascertained by surname and village. The rest of us, or rather thevast majority of us, wouldn't be bothered about a person's caste.

If you ask my wife, Beatrice D'Costa, where she is from she will tell you Divar. She was born and lived there, till she married me. She is a Divarkar. But actually her father migrated from Majorda. So are they from Majorda? No. Beatrice's father's family was originally from Verna from where they migrated to Majorda a few generations back.

I can picture Fred right now rushing to his indexed caste database. What a shame that some people are so obsessed.

Cheers!
