I have personally witnessed people addressing the "Cristao Bamonn bhattkarni" (Christian Brahmin landladies) using the suffix 're' (pronounced 'ray',) but that was in the 1950's; that generation is dead and gone now.

In Goa, girls are addressed with a suffix "gho" and elderly women as "ghe.
Young boys and men are addressed with a suffix "re" and elderly men as "gha."

When speaking to a tenant or a common man, Christian Brahmin landladies then avoided the use of suffix "re" because it was meant for them. Similarly, they avoided addressing elderly women as "ghe" - they addressed all women as "gho!"

In Goa, children address their parents as "maim ghe" and "pai gha" out of respect, but I have come across children who address their parents as "maim gho" and "pai re" e.g, "maim gho, hanv khellonk voitam;" (mother, I am going to play;) "dedlea, ami Mapxeam iea mure?" (daddy, shall we go Mapusa?)

Dear Cecil,

I have never heard in Goa a women being referred with
a suffix "re" Brahamin or whatsoever she may be.

With regards to an elderly woman being referred with
suffix "ge" I agree, as we still call Mai-ge ( For
mother) or Aunty-ge ( for Aunts)

If you say so, I too will start my hunt to see those
women ( Brahamin) being referred as " re"

Cheers!!!

normal Konkani for a female.
