I am replying to an old post ... yes, indeed I was deluged by all the "other" stuff, and there's more! Never mind that. Last Friday's Herald Sun Cars Guide (and later, Age's Drive supplement) brought a number of articles on China's Car Show - and what a number on display, all made in China! Most were downright ugly to look at, underpowered by Australian standards (all 4-cyl engines), no 4WD, but never mind that, predictions are that China's car industry is set to boom dramatically, and already cycles are giving way to cars. I understand from one article, that Australian-made cars horns, made to last a lifetime here (so far I have blown the horn maybe a dozen times in as many years), did not last 3 months in China, as everyone there, as in India, is "horn-happy". But there is possibly a discordant note to all this. The accident and death rate is very high. Worse, driving whilst inebriated appears to be an accepted way of life in China! I know that India has made some good strides re alternative automotive propulsion systems, but we don't hear much about it - wonder why. Cheers, Gabriel de Figueiredo. Melbourne - Australia.
