GIDC directed to conduct survey of sites to dispose industrial waste
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Minister for Tourism and Environment, Dr Wilfred de Sousa
said the government has directed the Goa Industrial Development
Corporation (GIDC) to carry out a survey of 2 to 3 probable sites
around the state for disposing the hazardous industrial waste
generated in Goa.

The survey would start immediately, irrespective of monsoon,
and completed in three month's time, said Dr de Sousa, adding
that the Hyderabad-based Ranky Group would carry out the task
to see whether these sites could be used or not.

Addressing a press conference, today, Dr de Sousa said that
around 6,200 metric tonnes of hazardous industrial waste is produced
by 180 industries, annually. He also said that these industries must
collectively fund the project of land-fill for disposing their hazardous
waste. The waste generating industries manufacture products like
pesticides, ferro alloys, etc.

Further speaking, the Minister said that the Supreme Court, in one
of its recent judgments on a public interest litigation, has directed
the states to have their own hazardous industrial waste disposal
system, when the quantity of such garbage reaches 20,000 metric
tonnes. The required land for setting up such a project is 30 to 40
acres, while the expenses for the entire project would touch few
crore rupees, he pointed out.

Dr de Sousa also stressed on the need to evolve a policy for
preventing new pollution-making industries from setting up their
units in Goa.
