Goa family burnt to death

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 (Vasco):

An entire family has been wiped out in Goa, over a lovers' tiff.

Early on Tuesday morning, the Naik-Rathod family of four was burnt to
death, allegedly by the lover of a woman Ratnabai.

According to the police, Ratnabai was having an extra-marital affair
with a man called Sharan Basappa who suspected her of seeing a third
man as well.

These doubts led him to burn the entire family alive.

"We were informed at 2:15 that a house was on fire. The door was
locked from outside and we saw that there were bodies inside," said
Sammy Travers, police inspector.

Accused nabbed

On quizzing Ratna's sister, the Vasco police fanned out and within
hours arrested Basappa as he tried to flee the state.

Burn injuries on Basappa's body tied him to killings. Ratna's sister
says Basappa had often quarreled with her and Ratna.

"There were frequent fights between my sister and Basappa. On several
occasions the accused threatened to murder her," said Maruthi Naik,
Ratnabai's sister.

In a country where such crimes often go unsolved, the quick work by
the Vasco police can come only as good news.

For Ratna's family members what matters now is that their sister's
killer is brought to justice.
