"Chandnem udhelam, cheddva tuge dhamp go zonelam (repeat)."

When there is a moonlight outside, why one should close her windows?

Here is why!

Until the early 1970’s, most parts of Goa lived in the dark without electricity. Whenever people wanted to visit their neighbors or go to a “posro” (shop) at night, they used natural torches made out of dried coconut leaves or carried a candle in a coconut shell. But, they did not need these things when the moon shone brightly in the sky. During moonlit nights, people traveled freely without worrying that they might stamp a snake and get bitten by it or dash another person coming from the opposite direction. In fact, people scheduled their visits to far away relatives during full moon time. The moonlit nights meant better opportunities for boyfriends to visit their girlfriends and for mischievous boys to make sudden entries into houses and attack girls – yes, these things happened even in the past but not on a large scale; hence, the suggestion to Cicil in the Dulpod to close her windows in order to avoid untoward happenings.

All of the Goan Mandos, Dekhnnis and Dulpodam are based on Goa’s history, and every word/line conveys a different meaning.
