Hello Goanetters,

The Goa Desc is doing a very good job here. We should all make it our duty to support their efforts, in making Goa a better place, in all respects. This latest campaign should be wholeheartedly supported.

I agree that the Fishing Ban, aspecially to mechanised trawlers shoild be re-extended to end of August, as is even supported by NIO with logic and science on their side.

I do earnestly hope that the Goa Desc with the support of the resident people in Goa, will maintain and campaign strongly to extend this Fishing Ban to end of August. Talk to the minister and the CM and put some science and logic into their actions. If they do not listen and do the needful within a fortnight, then there should be a campaign against all fishing and fish eating and trading, until the valid objectives are realised.

Mackerels: to fish or not to fish
----------------------------------------
by Gasper D'Souza

But now that the catch of solar prawns closer to the shore is
decreasing,
purse seines are moving away from the coast. And in the process they
are encountering huge quantities of mackerels that are unloaded at the
jetties each day. To make matters worse a majority of the catch is female.
"Earlier, our forefathers would venture out into the sea only in late August
or early September after the sea got calm. The rough sea was nature's
way of protecting itself. But fishermen in Goa as elsewhere around the world have always
practiced mandatory rest periods during which no fishing activity is
carried out and fish are allowed to regenerate.

The NIO had recommended a fishing ban till August end. Now even
the August 15 date is not heeded. Fishing is similar to farming.

Fishermen, like farmers must stockpile seed so that future crops
can again grow to maturity. If the seed is neglected the fields will lie fallow. Average citizens could make a start by refusing to purchase
fish with roe.

Fish should be allowed to breed, grow older and breed some more.
Abundance is part of nature. All humans need to do is to work with,
not against, nature.
