TIATRO “Bhurgim Mai-Paichem Sukh”

As expected, a very well attended by the audience tiatro written & directed by the well-known playwright Rosary Ferns was staged on 12th August 2005 at Hawally A/c Hall, starting at 4.35 p.m. The drama was well appreciated by the overwhelming majority of the audience and that it was so, was proved when none in the hall left his or her seat till the end of the drama. The story is written on the family life where children when they go to the West for higher education rarely return back to see their parents. It was very relevant to the current events taking place in our midst when our children turn their back to their country, parents and homes. The ending part of the play was beautifully depicted in which Sylvester Vaz, Laurent Pereira, Antonette de Calangute and Annie Quadros played their roles beautifully. Otherwise too, these artistes played stellar roles in the whole drama giving their best so unselfishly to make this tiatro one of the most memorable ones. Among the others who excelled in their respective roles were Xavier Furtado as footballer wearing the genuine Jersey of Dempo Sports Club, Goa, this Jersey was especially sent to Xavier for this occasion by Dempo’s coach Armando Colaco, Adrian, Marcus Vaz, Bab Agnelo, Sanny de Quepem, Manuel de Santa Cruz, Lawry Miranda, Querobina, Sandra, Margareth and Clara. The comedy part was nicely played by Prince Jacob and Humbert. The beautiful scenes as witnessed by the entire audience with rapt attention were arranged by Simon Gonsalves who also played a very dominant role in the last scene.

In the side show songs all the trios, namely of Marcus-Laurent-Sylvester and Rosary-Querobina-Sanny were appreciated by the audience. The solos of Sanny on “Ayah” and that of Rosary on his personal life as an artiste were to be applauded. The duet rendered by Antonette and Marcus Vaz was excellent. The duo rendered by Prince Jacob & Humbert in praise of M. Boyer was meaningful. Zoro’s solo on Mobile Bar was most applauded by the audience. The octet rendered by Adrian-Xavier-Simon-Querobina-Clara-Sandra-Margaret-Lawry M. was unique.

The musical score was provided by Philip who showed total perfection on the organ, Dennis a seasoned Base Guitarist, Rafiq on Rhythm Guitar, Agnelo on Drums and Faustin on Trumpet. Stage setting and Mike system were done by Thomas Lekhinston. Video Filming of the show was done by Vinodh.

During the interval the Chief Guest Fr. Diogo Fernandes coming from Goa applauded the superlative qualities of Rosary Ferns by being the first artiste to produce the first ever Konkani CD, 19 Dramas, 12 Konkani Albums and innumerable songs. Later on Fr. Diogo Fernandes was presented by Fidelis Fernandes – The President of KHK – a Memento. As a whole the drama was a big success.

To organize a drama in Kuwait is not an easy task. I have been in this field since 1977 when we first organized a drama in the Church Hall for the cause of Konkani and direct flight. Now that we are bringing visiting artistes from Goa, lot of formalities are required and expenses are also incurred tremendously. Visas for the visiting artistes and emigration clearance from Goa is another headache. Their boarding and lodging plus sufficient place for practices before the show is yet another tedious job. And when the visiting artistes hasten to leave for Goa on the same night after the show then the tension of the organizers reach to the peak. Many times visiting tiatrists think only of their returning back immediately after reaching Kuwait and while doing so they even neglect their duty to perform well on the stage and in the bargain they do any rubbish even performing previously performed items thereby cutting a sorry figure of themselves. The organizers spend so much of money after them but in turn some of the visiting artistes do not show any regard towards their duties, in fact every visiting artiste cost the organizers approximately 40 to 50 thousand rupees. So many times I myself told some of the visiting artistes not to return back to Goa on the same night of the show making hurry and putting pressure on the organizer but first they say yes and when they come to Kuwait they change their version. This is very disgusting. In future either such tiatrists should abstain from coming to Kuwait or organizers should not bring them to Kuwait because people come to watch the drama not only because of the artistes but also mainly because of the skill of the organizers to sell the tickets.

The biggest headache for the organizers is to see the show ending peacefully without any untoward incident in the hall. But this does not happen always. Because of chronic fistfights in the hall some years back by the drunkard audience, the Bishop of Kuwait banned the hall facilities for staging of Goan dramas in the Church hall. On 12th of this month during the show of Rosary Ferns a fist fight was about to take place when 2 Goans totally drunk forced their way into the hall without tickets, one of them was from Curtorim who was once an ace foot-baller in Goa of all India stature. The same guy was so rude that he not only demanded free entry into the hall along with his equally drunk colleague but also demanded to get a seat on the front row or else he said he will make a big noise in the hall and disrupt the proceedings. He did not even have a shame to act so rudely in front of the visiting chief guest priest who once was the Vicar of Curtorim. The organizers to prevent any confusion in the hall had to put their head down in silence till the drunkard Goans especially the exfootballer was shown his way out. If there was any complaint the drunkards would go to the prison and thereby damage the good image of Goans in Kuwait which was created mainly by the Goans during the invasion of Kuwait by supporting Kuwaiti cause. In fact the ex drunkard foot-baller was never involved with those Goans who supported Kuwait during invasion of Kuwait inspite of being in Goa during that time. These people want Kuwait only to earn Dinars but not to support Kuwait. It was such a shame that the same guy during the commotion as per my information, unzipped his pant and displayed his private part. It is also a shame for the community to have amongst us such rowdies. Community members and community leaders must ponder over this and work hard to eradicate drunkardness amongst us in public places. Such drunkards even bring the name of their employers into disrepute. I am sure the news of this incident must have already reached to the employers of the drunkards and even to the Police. If this type of drunkardness is not stopped during our tiatros then the authorities may even stop renting their halls for our tiatros which we want to promote more and more. God alone save us and our community from Drunkard Rebels in our midst. I hope sensible and respectable Goans will raise their voices in unison instead of supporting the wrong doers who are all out to destroy our tiatros and lower the image of our community. In the same hall other communities are also organising their shows but never there appears any disorder and drunkardness as we witness for our tiatros and other shows.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
