GOAN TIATRIST HONOURED IN KUWAIT.

First time in the history of Goans in Kuwait, at least to my knowledge, a Goan was honoured by the Mangaloreans in Kuwait by organizing a nice function. This was done today 19th August 2005 at 5.00 p.m. when one of the renowned Goan tiatrists Rosary Ferns was honoured by “Konkan Kullvaar Kuwait”. The function was organized to mark “The Konkani Day” which really falls on 20th tomorrow but since today Friday being a holiday here in Kuwait, it was held today. Konkani Kullvaar Kuwait is an association of Mangaloreans, which engulf in its fold some of the renowned literary figures including Sahitya Academy Award winner Lancy Pinto Nayak. Today’s was the daylong function where in the morning they discussed topics on journalism while in the afternoon it was the honouring function where besides Rosary another person was also honoured, his name is Gilbert Sebastian Saldanha popularly known as Gibba Khulsekar who has created a special niche in the Konkani world in general and Mangalorean community in particular as one of the top short story writers. During the last 37 years he has been writing and winning awards too. He is the senior citizen of Mangalore and married to a Goan from Margao long time back. The afternoon function was started with Lancy Pinto Nayak welcoming the guests followed by a group song “Konkani Amchi Bhas” by melodious singer Gratian D’Souza and it was a composition of Wilfy Remimbus. Then the gathering was delighted by another song on Konkani, which is a duet by Ivan Almeida and Wandana. One small skit written and directed by Janet Almeida was also staged in which Johny Suratkal and Jannet herself performed. With her sweet voice sweet-faced Telma rendered a nice song with attractive and youthful Lolita Rodrigues. This song was very pleasing to the listeners' earns as their voices first and second synchronized well. Rosary Ferns on request rendered his one of the best songs “Matharpon” which was very fabulously applauded by the audience. Gratian D’Souza rendered the most favourite songs in the Mangalorean community “Rosalyn Mojea Mogachem” and created total uproar in the hall, so much so he was requested to sing it once again which he did before the final curtain fell and while he was singing many among the audience came to the floor and started dancing. This song is over one hundred years old and its author is still not properly known and as such it goes in the category of traditional song. Normally no Mangalorean party or function ends without this song and no Mangalorean will not know this charismatic song. The musical score was wonderfully provided under the leadership of Joyson D’Souza whose presentation and showmanship was excellent and he was very ably supported by Melwyn Lobo and Lloyd Colaco. Lawry Pinto was the chief guest and Elvino Rodrigues the president of Kuwait Konknni Kendr was the guest of honour. In their respective capacities they put traditional Shawls and presented Mementoes to Rosary Ferns and Gibba Khulsekar respectively.

Khulsekar and Rosary Ferns in their speeches detailed their works in their respective fields for the knowledge of the gathering even though the organizers Ms Ida and her colleague gave exhaustive reviews of Rosary and Khulsekar.

Lawry Pinto and Elvino Rodrigues in their respective speeches praised the organizers for honouring the great Konkani stalwarts who are doing yeomen services, one thru his literary works while the other thru Tiatro.

To make this function, as most memorable, writer and poet Johny Suratkal along with his colleague Lancy Pinto Nayak spared no stone unturned. They deserve full marks and so too their team who helped them in making this even a very successful.

Johny Suratkal compered the proceedings.

When announced, many in the hall showed their appreciation to Rosary Ferns when they came to know that at this young age he produced first ever Konkani CD, produced 13 Konkani Albums in the form of CDs and Audio Cassettes, 19 full lenght Dramas, one VCD and innumerable songs. As a matter of information Rosary Ferns has scripted One Act Plays, staged Operattas and wrote original Mandos and Dulpods. He is the only stage artiste in Kuwait to compose and render original Mandos and Dulpods besides Operattas. His genius in this fielf one should see in the next "Songit Sanz" by Kuwait Konkkni Kendr.

On behalf of myself, my like minded colleagues and friends, like minded Goans and all the local Tiatrists who share my views, I congrtulate Rosary Ferns for being honoured by Konkani Kullvaar Kuwait. I admire Konkani Kullvaar Kuwait a Mangalorean association for honouring thus a deserving artiste.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
