WHAT KONKANI NEEDS: What Konkani needs to address first
is how to make Goans more passionate about their language
and a strategy to tackle the challenge posed by English
and Hindi, writes LINKEN FERNANDES. What Konkani needs in
a hurry, therefore, is an overwhelming presence on TV and
other electronic media, he writes. Entertainment seems to

NEWS THAT MATTERS:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBERING DOM: With his gangly good looks and the
world-weary carelessness, Dom Maraes was an urbane but
vulnerable minstrel. He was a brilliant
conversationalist, full of amusing stories and anecdotes.
But one had to strain hard to catch his
near-imperceptible flow of words. Not so for the poems
that speak as eidetic entities. -- Goa-based poet Manohar
Shetty, remembering Goa-origin poet Dom Moraes, a year
after his death. Time Out Mumbai, July 17-30, 2005.
REVIEW OF A (MUMBAI) RESTAURANT: Uplit palm trees sway above white
cotton canopies and suspended canvas sails. Buena Vista Social Club
croons over the insistent whisper of the Arabian Sea. Hammocks
loll, lounge chairs beckon, sand shifts underfoot. The only clue
that you are still in the city (of Mumbai) is the murmur of traffic
from Marine Drive which, amazingly, is just beyond that
jute-and-bamboo partition. Salt Water Grill's spiritual home,
however, is Goa ... Iain Ball reviewing a restaurant at Girgaum
Chowpatty, next to H2O Water Sports Complex, Time Out Mumbai.
EDWIN BRITTO has been campaigning against illegal structures,
including the around 400 buildings in the Old Khar village he
alleges have come up without municipal clearances. HYGINUS D'LIMA,
a 70-year-old engineer who specialises in industrial lubricants,
has been campaigning against noise pollution in Mumbai. He lives on
Andheri's Gaothan Lane No 1. D'Lima's doggedness recently made him
the subject of a documentary film titled 'Is God Deaf?' SHANTARAM
SHENAI has been experimenting with vermiculture, and has been
showing Mumbai that it isn't just possible to recycle organic
waste, but also to re-create soil using deep-burrowing earthworms.
He was inspired by Uday Bhawalkar of the Pune-based Bhawalkar
Energy Research Institute.

LANGUAGE, GOA AND KONKANI
---------------------------------------------------------------------
'Sodh', the Konkani research bulletin published the Thomas Stephens
Konknni Kendr in Porvorim, is out in bulletin 7 and 8. Some
highlights from these issues:
SHENOY GOEMBAB: Vaman Raghunath Varde Valaulikar alias
Shennoi Goembab (1877-1946) saw the Konkani language as a
means of emancipation of the Konkani language, writes
Madhavi Sardesai (Goa University, Department of Konkani).
He demonstrated in his writings and dispelled the myth
that a heavy borrowing from the classical sources is
necessary in order to prepare a language for various
technical ordeals. Here Shennoi Goembab differs
remarkably from a classical Konkani scholar like Msgr
Dalgado.Whereas "area" for dalgado is 'garbhi' or
abhyamtar, for Shenoy Goembab it is bhumy-map. 'Suffix'
for Dalgado is 'pratyay' or 'utarakshar', for Shennoi
Goembab it is 'koos'. Dalgado does not hesitate to
accept 'silalekh' (stone-engraving) from the Sanskrit;
Shennoi Goembab renders it as 'pashana barap'.
'Godfather' for Dalgado is 'dharmabap' or 'dharmapita'.
Shennoi Goembab brings it ever closer to the Konkani
tongue by rendering it as 'dharmam bapuy'. Many more
instances could be taken.
Other articles focus on the work of Fr Antonio Pereira, Fr Moreno
de Souza SJ, Vasco do Rego SJ, Young Chico, Romi script Konkani and
its future (by Pratap Naik SJ), a case arguing why
'standardisation' of Konkani could cause more hurt than benefit,
Konkinit Nkarsoochak 'Nn' (by Dr Rocky V Miranda linguist from
Mysore), linguist Dalgado and Konkani (by Mathew Almeida), Kiran
Budkuley on Shenoi Goembab, The Siddhi-Konkani Retroflexes torn
between Indo-Aryan Apical Post-alveolar and Dravidian Sub-apical
Palatal Articulators (by Selmo Azavedo Apontes & Jean-Pierre
Angenot, Konkani books published in 2002 and 2004.

POSITIVE INITIATIVES IN GOA
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1098 Childline service launched in South Goa: Childline,
a national 24-hour free phone emergency outreach service,
has been operational in India since 1995 and Goa since
2000. It is the project of the Ministry of Social
justice and Empowerment in partnership with State
Governments, NGOs, UNICEF, academic institutions, and the
corporate world.
Till recently the Child helpline 1098 was operational for the whole
of Goa from Don Bosco Collaborative Organisation, Panjim. For
greater outreach and considering the geographical vastness of Goa,
it was decided to operationalise the service separately in the
districts of North and South Goa.
Accordingly, Childline India Foundation, the Nodal Agency for
Childline service in India, appointed Jan Ugahi as the
Collaborative Organisation for South Goa from where 1098 and the
intervention service is to be operational. Don Bosco will continue
to operate the service for North Goa.
From August 15, the new service, meant especially for
children in difficult circumstances -- including children
ill and alone, children in need of shelter, children
abandoned or lost, children being abused, working
children being exploited or denied their wages or being
bullied on the streets -- has been installed and
inaugurated by the SDPO, Quepem, Tony Fernandes.
CONSUMERS, BEWARE: St Xavier's College at Mapusa
[EMAIL PROTECTED] points out that India's Consumer
Protection Act and the rights it provides are totally unknown to
many consumers. The Consumer Welfare Cell at St. Xavier's College,
Mapusa, is organising a year long "Consumer Rights Festival" under
a scheme introduced by the Department of Consumer Affairs,
Government of India. The scheme is meant to promote involvement of
research institutions or universities and colleges in Consumer
Protection and Consumer Welfare. Out of 151 proposals received
nationwide, St Xavier's was one of those selected and granted Rs
100,000 for the festival. This festival will comprise of various
activities. A Consumer Rights Awareness Drive for the entire staff
and all the students of the college will be held from August 8 to
Sept 12, 2005. Persons actively involved with the consumers' right
movement will be invited to address students. Street plays, poster
competitions and more are also being pllanned.

CULINARY CORNER: Global tastes -- Hamburgers

over low heat about 10 minutes. Drain off the excess fat. Mix
ketchup, chili sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Pour sauce over

onto the patties occasionally. Serve with the sauce spooned over
the patties. Put between 2 toasted buns slathered with mayonnaise
and enjoy.
