My Dear Cousin Jose, Thanks for your very thoughtful message - it was really inspiring - we really need highly educated Goan professionals from all disciplines in addition to engineers from IITs and other engineering colleges - eg. medicine, law, IT, journalism,....,culinary arts (esp. to keep up our Cooks n Butlers tradition and heritage - which I am very proud of too, btw) ...etc...as you so eloquently mentioned in your email.. for the Greater Good of Our Beloved Goa.
Having such highly educated youth in Goa will also help keep out the "Bhailes" from taking all the plum jobs in Goa.. and if they are entrepreneurial enough they may even create jobs for our Goans. However, you might have got your facts slightly mixed up a bit... Yes, there is a distinguished alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur from the Architecture and Town Planning program in 1982 who did a redesign for Betul/Mobor to be a Venice of Asia...a tourist Mecca ! He is Dr. Joseph Aranha - he spent atleast six to nine months of his final two years of the 6-year IIT Architecture and Town Planning program working on this projectin Goa. He got a number of awards for that project. Dr. Aranha is a creative genius and a genial Tulu-tainted Konkani speaking guy from Mangalore and a close friend of mine. Discussing nitty-gritty details of his projects in our IIT hostel whenever he returned from his frequent trips to Goa, really took me back to AVC and our Velim hamlet during my IIT days.. He is currently a faculty member at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Tx. You can check his website for more details. http://www.arch.ttu.edu/people/faculty/aranha%5Fj/ Dr. Aranha is only one of the many globally-dispersed IIT-graduates who have distinguished themselves to make a difference in this world !! After all the IITs were established in the 1950s as a manifestation of the vision of Pandit Nehru "as temples of learning in a free and secular India". As an Indian, a Goan and an IITian, I am proud to say that in general we IITians have lived up to those lofty expectations, despite political mud-slinging...
