If you use the VSNL ISP in Goa to dial-up to the Internet, and were wondering why it wasn't responding for over 24 hours till yesterday (Tuesday) morning... there was a major cable break just outside the VSNL office in Panjim. This is located at the 5th Floor, 213 Tristar Building at Patto Plaza in Panjim.
When I ran into K C Subedar (the customer support, retain person), he took me to the window of the office, and showed the repair work in progress. That was Monday evening. It was expected to have got ready "in minutes". But the Net connectivity via VSNL for subscribers in Goa came back only on Tuesday afternoon. Incidentally, VSNL is now privately controlled, after this profitable company was sold to the Tatas. Service is polite, but costs are higher. A hundred-hour account costs in the region of Rs 800, compared to Rs 600 or less for BSNL. One of VSNL's useful product which might be useful if you're a heavy web-surfer is the three-month unlimited pack, for a little over Rs 900. (Of course, this covers only Internet time; phone bills are extra.) VSNL's speeds seem to be faster, and apart from this one major glitch, the service has been good.
