1. Hickam Air Force Base/Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii (USA). A multi-runway facility in a tourist mecca-cum-military station, managed as an integrated complex without any controversies.
2. Frankfurt Airport/Rhein-Main Military Base, Germany Military base played a key role in the Berlin Airlift at the beginning of the Cold War. Closed in Dec 2005 by agreement between Germany and US. Frankfurt airport is a major European airline hub. 3. Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong Closed in 1998 the day Chek Lap Kok International Airport was commissioned. Hong Kong is 1/4 the size of Goa hence distance was not a problem with the new airport for which ground transportation was developed in an integrated way. 4. Trudeau Airport, Montreal. Was due to be closed when Mirabel Airport was commissioned in 1975 some distance away. But Mirabel proved to be a white elephant and international flights returned to Trudeau (which had originally been known as Dorval). 5. Love Field, Dallas A close-in airport which was due to be closed when Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was commissioned in the early 70s. One low cost carrier held out at Love Field and the airport thrived even though a top politician piloted a legislation which prevented inter-state flights from it in the late 70s.
