(GT) HARVESTING CONCRETE: It was (ex-CM) Shashikala Kakodkar's Fifth Amendment to the Agricultural Tenancy Act, an infamous statute which killed Goa's agriculture because all agri "tenants" were "deemed to have purchased" the land they tilled for a price that would be fixed by the government in future. This 'future' arrived only a decade-odd later. That too in the form of a ridiculous pittance of a land price, payable over 10 equal annual instalments. (Dr Joe D'Souza, Herald) UDAY BHEMBRE, ON THE PRESS: Herald, in my view, should not try to be a 'national' paper in the sense that it should not ignore local news and run away from issue of local interest. As a reader, I do not expect any local newspaper to ignore the controversial VCD produced by the Government and devote its columns to discuss films like 'Lagaan' or 'Swades'. An identification parade will be conducted on Monday. Hopefully her identification will once and for all seal the fate of four men, one of whom raped her in a moving car and later took her to a hotel where three others sexually exploited her. See http://www.ncte-in.org Send in your observations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] by October 15. EDUCATION, SOFTWARE, ETC: Dr Anil Seth, a US-educated technologist and educator at the Padre Conceicao College of Engineering <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> recently shared this via the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list: Our college had organised a visit by students from a school in Nuvem village. It was amazing that in about two hours the kids had discovered the various games, including on Linux, and decided which they liked. They also 'pestered' us to explain why some games (Chromium) wouldn't run on some computers. In fact, that was when I discovered that our lab consisted of computers with two different motherboards. Girls had preferred other games but they too wouldn't leave the lab when the time came for them to go. There are a number of projects which are very exciting -- concerned with changing our ideas about what CAN be taught, e.g. differential equations to fifth graders, obviously not in the conventional techniques. Perhaps my pessimism about our schools is misplaced. Alan Kay has been greatly influenced by Marshall McLuhan (Media is the Message); the activities of their group are at www.squeakland.org. Other sites offering exciting possibilities about learning complexity are http://education.mit.edu/starlogo/ http://ccl.northwestern.edu/cm/ See KITrust mailing list http://mail.knowledgeinitiatives.org/mailman/listinfo/kitrust_knowledgeinitiatives.org IF YOU ARE A PARENT: By Azim H Premji If you are a parent, you have many aspirations for your child that may include him or her becoming a doctor, an engineer, scientist or another kind of successful professional. I believe these aspirations are driven by your thinking about your child's future, and her centrality in your life. Since good education is often the passport to a good future, I presume it leads you to getting your child admitted to a good school. Then you encourage your child to study hard and do well in school exams. To bolster this, you send him or her for tuition classes. This would have primed your child for board exams and entrance exams, thereby leading to admission into a good professional course. Doing well at college increases the probability of landing a good job. And a good job means the child's future is ensured. I am neither a psychologist nor an educationist, and what I will now state may seem counter-intuitive. I think that these aspirations and actions might be doing more harm than good to your child. To understand why, we need to re-examine some of our fundamental assumptions. In the first place, I have seen time and again that living for some distant future goal also means you do not live in the present. The distant goal will always translate into an external measure of success, such as exams. And most exam-focused children start forgetting what it means to be a child -- to be curious, mischievous, exploring, falling, getting up, relating, discovering, inventing, doing, playing. Childhood is very precious; precious enough not be wasted by the artificial pressures of contrived competition, by too many hours of bookish study, and by school report cards that simplistically wrap up an entire human being in numbers. The second assumption is that education is merely a ticket to socio-economic success. Given the state of our country, this reality cannot be ignored. But restricting education to only this aspect is, I think, a very limiting notion of the aim of good education. The primary purpose of a school is to guide the child in her discovery of herself and her world, and to identify and nurture the child's talents. Just as every seed contains the future tree, each child is born with infinite potential. Imagine a school which sees children as seeds to be nurtured -- here the teacher is a gardener who helps to bring out the potential already present in the child. This is very different from the current view which sees the child as clay to be moulded -- where the teacher and parents are potters deciding what shape the clay should take. There is an old (and forgotten) Chinese saying: "Give a seed to a potter, and you will get a bonsai." Even in a commercial organisation, to make profits we do not have to chase profits. Rather, we need to build an institution that gives every employee an opportunity to do meaningful and fulfilling work. Create an organisation driven by values of innovation, integrity, customer centricity and care. And as you practise these values everyday and moment, you will see that the profits take care of themselves. Similarly, dear parent, this is my request to you. Do not give up your child's present to secure his or her future. Give your child the freedom to truly explore life with abandon. In doing this, you will see your child flower into a creative and sensitive human being. And when this happens, everything else -- money, social success, security -- will fall into place automatically. Let your child be a child. [The writer is Chairman, Wipro Ltd. ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE: Last Thursday (Oct 6), the audience at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research tuned in to an unusual talk, questioning a number of widely-held premises on Konkani, by Ramnath Naik. Jesuit historian Dr Delio Mendonca <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> announces that the next 'history hour' will be a talk by advocate and former MLA Uday Bhembre titled 'Roadmap for Faster Development and Standardisation of Konkani Language'. Thursday, October 20, 2005 5.30 pm. Tel: 2417772; 2414971. Synopsis: Konkani survived the lethal blow in the form of the decree of 1684 which sought to eliminate it. It showed tenacity and resilience. The three decades following the liberation of Goa are particularly important. Konkani established itself as an independent literary language. Doors and gates hitherto closed to it opened up offering new opportunities for development. But the biggest hurdle is the multiplicity of scripts. The way out is to gradually converge on its natural script Devanagari for faster development and standardization. Adv. Uday Bhembre has been active in the Konkani movement for the last more than 45 years. He was president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa; Goa Konkani Akademi and All India Konkani Parishad. At present he heads Asmitai Pratishthan, a public charitable trust, dedicated to the cause of Konkani language, literature and culture. He has published two books, a collection of poems in Konkani and a collection of journalistic writings in Marathi. Cip from London/Arpora <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes in to say, in the context of a recent statement reported on Goanet News Bytes: "It appears that Portugal's ambassador to India Joaquim F Marques knows what he said is NOT true. In fact, it Portuguese Government adopted a go-slow policy particularly in the Portuguese Consulate in Goa. Every birth certificate as well as other documents has to be endorsed by the Consulate office wherever the certificates are issued. For endorsement of certificates, the Goa Consulate gives an appointment after a year or two." RUTH RESPONDS: Ruth Desouza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> responds to Dominic's article: Thanks for your lovely piece in the Goanet Reader about pigs in Goa. I am not sure who is doing what. All I am concerned about, as a person who has chosen to come and live in Goa (among other international choices) is the proliferation of garbage dumping sites all over Goa. The Goa Government has conveniently passed the buck on to the Municipalities and Panchayats, and the Panchayats especially are ill-equipped to deal with the garbage situation. Something needs to be done, and soon, or the stench of the garbage will drive us away. While you speak the truth, I cannot sit idly by and see my beautiful Goa destroyed. As long as I have a single breath in my body, I will continue to speak up and write. I am very familiar with waste disposal systems in the USA, where part of my responsibilities as Director of Facilities for our school system with 214 schools, included waste disposal and recycling. Clearly, I cannot replicate the USA model here. Goa is light years away from that. But we have to make a start somewhere. Right now we have a meeting this Sunday morning on the beautiful Socorro/Salvador do Mundo plateau which used to be frequented by bird watchers. Since it is a secluded area, the local Panchayats have found it a convenient place to simply dump the garbage here. In a way, I cannot entirely blame them. They just dont have the technical expertise or the common sense. The State Government has conveniently "passed the buck" on to the Panchayats and Municipalities. Please continue to rail and rant about this disaster. Silence is not an option. GOVIND JOSHI <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: I am a regular reader of Goanet News Bytes. It's just fantastic. Goanet (http://www.goanet.org) began as an expat-oriented mailing list related to the state of Goa. Goa is a former Portuguese colony, with a long pre-Portuguese history too, located in South Asia on the west coast of India. Goanet (http://www.goanet.org) was launched in August 1994 by a (then) 17-year-old student, Herman Carneiro. Quickly many other Goans (and people interested in Goa) joined the mailing list from across the globe, adding weight to the venture. Goanet (http://www.goanet.org) has since then grown as a co-operatively run, not-for-profit and volunteer-driven venture. It is now by far the most influential electronic mailing-list related to Goa. This GoanetWiki (http://www.goanet.org/wiki) is Goanet's attempt to allow the people from (and friends of) Goa to create an encyclopedia on Goa from the bottom up. There is no specific structure to the final appearance of this project that may be in development for some time to come. The only request is to ensure that we maintain a neutral point of view (NPOV) while updating content in the GoanetWiki (http://www.goanet.org/wiki). If you feel strongly about something that is incorrect, inaccurate or biased, you can make your point on the relevant 'talk' pages. If you would like to become a contributor or editor of the GoanetWiki, then get in touch with Goanet Admin (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]). Feel free to suggest relevant content to these pages. AIDS ------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom Foundation <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> announces that the National AIDS Control Phase 2 is coming to an end. Karl Pinto DeSouza, the project co-ordinator comments: "While there were many shortcomings, there was also much gains especially the shift in thinking to include civil society as partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS. A lot was achieved to consolidate Phase 2 including, giving of free ART (anti-retroviral) drugs to delay the progression of AIDS and improve quality of life, Giving of drugs to prevent children from getting it through their mothers, improved blood safety through voluntary blood donation and screening and the use of disposable syringes and the setting up of VCTCs to check HIV status voluntarily. Steps to inculcate behaviour change and an enabling environment including the soon to be tabled AIDS Bill which will tackle stigma and discrimination." But, he adds, one of the shortcomings of the older policy was the blame that everything was a Central policy and not the states and also only NGOs were getting the limelight. "Now is the chance for everyone to put forward their views because some of the highlights of NACP Phase 3 are (i) The decentralisation to the District Level (ii) The inclusion of all members of society through "mainstreaming" it, meaning each one takes responsibility, set up a budget, earmark an event, activity in their calendar to make AIDS an activity which concerns them in short ownership. This can be either funded or sponsored or technical expertise given," says Karl. Freedom Foundation has been invited to get opinions etc across. Adds Karl: "If any of you have any comments suggestions please write to us, and we will take note of it. I am not sure if and when, a formal gathering will take place at the District Level, but rather than wait, I have thought it best to trigger of a debate, discussion to get in suggestions. It is also supported by the fact that publications in the Roman script have a wider readership with the older generation, many of whom are non-resident Goans. The issue of insisting on the Roman script as the only vehicle for Konkani will deepen the insecurity and result in aggravating the sense of isolation and separatedness which we have to now mitigate and adjust as members of a community. The younger generation has adjusted to the change, and it is inspring to see how articulate and adept they are in both the English language and the devanagiri script. -- Maria Aurora Couto, in Renewal/Novsornni/Renovacao --------------------------------------------------------------- GENDER ----------------------------------------------------------------- The girl child's defiant cry [by Agnes Messias] Courtesy Bailancho Saad, SAAD Vol III No 4 "Anything you can do I could do better Provided we're not Tied down to the fetter Provided we are not Burnt at the stakes Provided we're not Drowned in the lakes. Dr. Norman Lewis, the grandson of the eminent Dr. Daniel Lewis of Parra, Bardez, Goa, reigned academically supreme at St. Stanislaus, Bandra, where he did his schooling. After his BSc(Tech), he joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1962. Government of India deputed him to Oregon State University (USA), for his Masters. His path-breaking thesis, discovering MICROCOCCUS RADIOPHILUS, the most radiation-resistant bacillus known to man, earned him his doctorate. A pioneer of the food irradiation programme programme which was instrumental in saving the country millions of dollars worth of foodgrains, Dr. Lewis was also part of the team which developed the vaccine against the dreaded Salmonella. At BARC, he headed several departments like Microbiology, Food Technology and Enzyme Engineering. At the invitation of United Nations bodies like the FAO, IAEA and the UNO itself, Dr. Lewis represented India at several international conferences and symposia from 1974 at Seattle, Munich, Manila, Tokyo, California, Las Vegas, Denver, San Diego. His achievements earned him a place in prestigious publications like Who's Who in the World (1982), Who's Who Indian Personages (1984), Whos Who in the Commonwealth, International Book of Honour, Men of Achievement, Dictionary of International Biographies and Profiles of Eminent Goans. Dr. Norman Lewis was tipped for the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the vaccine against cholera, when the untimely death in 1985 of this great savant, robbed the country of this rare honour. His wife Pramila nee Fernandes from Betalbatim who studied at Carmel College in Goa, helped found and sustain the very active Betalbatim Cricket Club which hosted ranking cricket tournaments in football-crazy Betalbatim. She teaches at Mumbai's Sacred Heart H. School, S.Cruz, and despite being traumatised with widowhood very soon after marriage, has done a remarkable job in carrying forward her husband's vision of academic excellence with their daughter Rosanne pursuing her post-graduate degree in Statistics at Bombay University and their son Newton seeking a degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Arkansas. She also works with the Lewis Family Trust. In recognition of the services of this celebrated son of India, BMC had in 1994 named the road in front of the Lewis family residence in Santa Cruz as Dr. Norman F. Lewis Chowk. Eleven years later, and in his 20th Death Anniversary year, a grateful country is honouring him with a statue at the Norman Francis Lewis Grounds, a sports haven for the public that the Lewis Family Trust maintains in Bandra. The Fontainhas Festival of the Arts 2005 will be held in the heritage precinct of Fontainhas-Mala between Nov 26-Dec 3 by the Goa Heritage Action Group with the Entertainment Sopciety of Goa, the Corporation of the City of Panaji and the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa as festival partners. Says Heta Pandit: This is a unique festival that uses the heritage houses in the precinct as temporary art galleries. It is designed to be an international event with Goan houses as a backdrop and Goa as a venue. The festival involves the exhibition and sale of art from private houses. There are also performances in the evenings with performers from all over the world. A list of houses and artists is supplied in the form of a map showing the artists and the houses where they have exhibited their work. A programme of events and brief bio data of artists will be available at the venue. Artists and performers who wish to participate in the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts 2005 are invited to send in their entries by October 15, 2005 to the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts 2005 office at 29/30 Green Valley, Porvorim, Goa 403521. Entries must include one photograph of the artist’s work, a brief bio-data, recent exhibitions (if any) and a returning address. An office of the organizers will be set up at the venue. 30% of all sales from the galleries and 20% of all sales from the street galleries will be collected from art buyers for which a receipt will be given. Half of this amount will be divided equally amongst all participating houses and the other half retained by the organizers to cover expenses of the festival. The Goa Heritage Action Group was formed in October 2000 and is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation of Goa's priceless heritage. The high point of the festival will be lectures delivered by five art personalities from across India. At last year's festival there was a lecture delivered by one great Indian art personality every evening. The artists were Prafulla Dahanukar, Meera Devidayal, Jahangir Sabavala, Saryu Doshi and Rekha Rodwittye. Over 150 artists and art lovers from all over the country attended the lecture. Process: In a large sauté pan, heat one tablespoon of the corn oil. Add the onion, ginger and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes over medium heat. Add the coriander, cumin, turmeric and the tomato and continue to cook until it turns dry. Remove from heat & cool down. In a large mixing bowl, combine crabmeat, onion mixture, shrimp, chopped lime zest and juice, cilantro, chives, beaten egg and 3 tablespoons of the panko. Season with salt, pepper and cayenne. Mix well so that all the ingredients are well incorporated. Test a small quantity by forming a teaspoon of this mix into a small patty and fry it in a pan. Adjust the salt and pepper if necessary. Divide this mixture into 4 equal portions. Form into balls and flatten to form small patties. Put the rest of the panko on a cutting board. Place the patties one at a time in the breadcrumbs. Heat a heavy-bottome! d skillet large enough to hold the crab cakes on medium heat. Add the oil and fry the crab cakes. When the cakes turn a light golden color, flip them over and cook them on the other side until they are light golden in color. Using a slotted spatula, remove and drain on a paper towel. I served my crab cakes with a sweet & spicy sauce, yum! Tip: For those of you that do not get readymade breadcrumbs -- toast some leftover bread in the oven until crispy, then blend to make a coarse powder, add some cumin and turmeric powders to give it a little flavor).
