Cops to prepare list of tenants in S Goa

NT News Service

Margao, Oct 9: The South Goa district police have decided to step up its
drive of collecting information about strangers, tenants and servants.

So far they have collected information about 100 strangers, besides some
tenants.

The South Goa SP, Mr Shekhar Prabhudessai convened a meeting of all
police officers from South Goa to initiate measures in this regard. The
meeting was also attended by the sub-divisional police officers from
Margao, Vasco and Quepem.

All the police officers have been asked to prepare a list of strangers,
tenants and servants within their jurisdictions and submit the same to
Margao headquarters.

Mr Prabhudessai has also directed police officers to meet senior
citizens to know their problems.

Increasing number of migrants in sub-urban areas of Salcete has
contributed to the rising crime graph.

Migrants from Karnataka and Andhra are working as labourers at various
construction sites and development projects in South Goa. It was felt
that the attention of police is needed in those areas wherein these
laborers reside.

It is also found that these migrants have encroached upon Comunidade and
government land for their habitation. The police contended that slum
areas and rooms taken on rent by tenants have become breeding ground for
criminals who after committing offence take shelter there.

It was disclosed that a hard-core criminal was arrested in a rented room
at Housing Board recently. He was wanted by the police in a theft case.
A police officer said the drive would act as deterrent and keep them on
toes.
