Extra fast patrol vessel launched at Goa Shipyard Panaji | October 20, 2005 1:36:55 AM IST Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) today launched an extra fast patrol vessel, Aruna Asaf Ali designed and built by GSL, at a colourful function held here. Addressing the reporters after the launch ceremony, Director General of Coast Guard Prabhakaran Paleri said that the Coast Guard is recognised within the country and abroad as a leading force on various fronts. The shipyards in India will respond to the requirements of the Coast Guard, he opined. It handles responsibilities on par with any other coast guard in the world particularly in the field of oil spillage recovery, marine search, rescue operations and border intelligence, he said. Earlier, Goa Shipyard Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Rear Admiral A K Handa, in his welcome address, said that the Goa Shipyard will endeavour to deliver the ship to the Coast Guard ahead of the earlier planned schedule. ''We will continue to strive hard to make future ships better than the previous ones. To achieve this, the Goa Shipyard Ltd has embarked upon the modernisation plans to take care of all future orders from the valued customers like Coast Guard and Indian Navy,'' he said. Presently, the Goa Shipyard is building one advanced offshore patrol vessel and five extra fast patrol vessels. Out of which, three are expected to be delivered to the Coast Guard by the end of the year 2005-06, Adm Handa said. UNI SRN SSS MA GC0052 -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes.
