Arrests at Indian outsourcing firm
By Sam Varghese
October 20, 2005 - 5:49PM
Two employees of an Indian company handling business processes outsourced
from
Britain have been arrested in Gurgaon, near the Indian capital New Delhi,
for
stealing confidential documents.
A report in the Indian news site, Daily News & Analysis, quoted the special
superintendent of police Hanif Qureshi as telling the media on Wednesday
that
Harish Parmar and Sarita Rawa were both UK citizens and associated with
Cybersys
Infotech Limited.
Cybersys was handling work for the UK company City Credit under an exclusive
contract and Parmar was City Credit's representative on the board of
Cybersys,
the report said.
The connection between Parmar and Rawa was not detailed; the latter was said
to
be an employee of Cybersys.
Cybersys had to develop extensive documentation for its staff to handle the
work
as it also involved mortgages.
Though the contract was supposed to be exclusive, City Credit began to
outsource
work to other Indian companies, the report said, and in order to cut its
costs,
the company allegedly used Parmar and Rawa to steal the manuals and supply
them
to the other companies to which it was sending work.
The police said that one company involved was Vanguard
Info-Solutions which is also based in Gurgaon. Another unnamed company is
also
suspected of being a recipient of the stolen documentation.
Vineet Kanwar, the director of Cybersys, filed a complaint with the police
against Parmar, Rawa, Parmar's wife who is a director of City Credit, and
City
Credit itself.
Cybersys has offices in Gurgaon and the US; calls to both offices went
unanswered.
This case is the latest in a string to hit the Indian outsourcing industry.
In
September, a call centre worker from Saffron Global was arrested for the
theft
of confidential data.
In June, a reporter from Britain's Sun said he had bought the personal
details
of 1000 Britons for around $7 from a New Delhi-based computer expert.
And in April, 16 workers of MphasiS, a company that handles outsourced work,
were arrested in Pune, western India, for siphoning off money from Citibank
US
account holders.
