Mr. Boyer is a great tiatirst, his songs are full of meanings, his messeage always dealt with the current events of the time. Among all his songs I can rightly say that "Sarem" was the best and it really suited the time and events of that particular period. Taichung paddy seeds were just introduced in Goa, it was called Japanese seeds that time. It was very high quality seed quantitywise compared to our normal seed. In the introductory year in Goa, Birla fertilizer sponsored one of our fields in our village for Taichung seed. It gave us very good returns but it was only because of high grade and expensive fertilizer supplied free of charge by Birla. Since it was expensive many of our farmers could not afford it. Besides, this seed required greater amount of water which is to be continuous. Our rain water was not sufficient enough to satisfy this. Hence, it was not suitable for Goan rain and Goan farmers who looked for cheap fertilizer. Hence, M. Boyer composed that beautiful song and sang all over Goa, I heard this song in Mapusa where in the "Mattou" opposite Police Station many of the farmers attending the Tiatro were whistling, applauding with standing ovation to M. Boyer. Some of the important words of that song are as follows and these word are very philosophical and also carry meaning:

ILLEXEM XETH PUN SAREM SAKANI
SAREM SAKANI ANI DUDDU LAKAHNI
VAVRAT RE VAVRAT GOYKAR PUTANI
TAICHUNG BHATAK BHAS SOMZONA KONKANI, etc.

Becuase of this song M. Boyer was considered as hero of farmers and working class. Immediately he was presented a gold pin for this great song by one of the Ministers of Goa Government but I dont remember whether Goa Government has given him any official or state award for this song.

A. Veronica Fernandes.
