Dear A. Veronica Fernandes,
In London, I have always found your contributions to Goanet on tiatro of considerable interest. Therefore, I should like to suggest that you produce a publication about the many people you have written about and their songs and plays. I am sure that there are many Goans who could assist you, if necessary, to put together a very interesting historical and contemporary book about this fine Goan art of tiatr. I for one would be the first to purchase such a publication.
Sincerely,
Cornel DaCosta, London, UK.

TIATRO REVOLUTION

Since the inception of tiatro over a century ago, tiatros and tiatirsts have always revolutionised Goan society in way or the other. J. P. Souzalin has revolutionised the wrong thinking, wrong traditions and superstitions based on fallacious assumptions. His masterpiece tiatro "Tiklem Cheddum Miklem" is a right evidence for our supertitions and wrong thinking. Minguel Rod revolted against caste system and brought a revolution in the otherwise caste ridden Goan society. He himself was a victimg of caste system and because of this he failed to wed his sweetheat from Candolim Saipem. Alexinho de Candolim by using the stage platform revolted against the bhattkarshai and to expose their ill deeds in collusion with the local Portuguese administration he fled to Bombay only to render one of his most revolutionary songs in support of the only son of his Parochial School Professor. The son of his professor was mercilessly beaten to death by the Portuguese Negroes from Aguada in Candolim and since he could not raise this issue openly from the stage in Goa because of rigid censorship, he fled to Bombay and from Bhangwaddi Stage in Bombay he rendered the most hard hitting song against Portuguese administration and the echo of it was immediately heard in Goa. Kid Boxer revolted against the governement of India's chickanery especially in forcibly annexing Goa. For expressing his God given opinion in free India from the Konkani stage in Bomaby he was arrested, sacked from his lucrative job at Central Railways and deported to Goa. In Goa again immediately after the liberation he was again arrested after he rendered one hard hitting solo "zupatti" against the Bharati Government for forcibly annexing Goa. He was dubbed as anti-Indian. But, Kid Boxer was pro-Goa and pro-Goans and for expressing his virew freely he suffered so much, first he lost his job and thereby pension in retirement, he suffered humiliation when he was imprisoned in Nasik and he was humiliated by the Bharati Government and fake freedom fighters. Inspite of all these he faced the challenge and expressed his views forcefully and freely. Such was the might of Kid Boxer. His one song from Konkani Stage was enough to shake the might of Government of Bharat. Conception Nelson and Anthony was a powerful trio rendering political songs and staging political dramas. This trio was raising its voice from the stage in support of Goa and Goans. MGP Government of Bandodkar and Shashikala Kakodkar were against this trio but the trio never cared and went on expressing its views in support of Goa and Goans. They have revolutionised Goan political life. Their Tiatro "Almas do Outro Mundo" written and directed by revolutionary Nelson Afonso is a good example of their thinking besides innumerable trio songs they rendered. What 12 members of UG in Goa Legislative Assembly could not attain for Goa they could attain in one trio song of theirs. This is the might of mighty revolutionary tiatrists. Tomazino Cardoso, his brother Anton Joao and their colleague Volley Demello all from Saipem Candolim at local level created solid revolution in support of Goa and Goans by using the Konkani Tiatro Stage. This trio was really bombastic and if they had little more exposure at all Goa level people all around Goa would be better beneficiaries. The main composer of this revolutionary trio was Tomazinho Cardoso whose marvellous brain in composing political songs and scripting political triatros unfortunately diminished with his involvement in his taking active part in local politics at Goa Government level.

Recently I had an opportunity to witness some Konkani Tiatro at Mapusa and Panjim and after watching two tiatros one of Prince Jacob "Roddo Naka" and the other by Rose Ferns "Goenkar" I am convinced now that revolution from the Konkani Stage has gained momentum. Both these tiatros are hard hitting slaps on the local politicians and awakening to the people. Prince Jacob shows how the son of a minister uses his father's clout to take law into his own hands and rape young and innocent Goan girls. Earlier we saw how "Narvenkarism" rocked Goa when Sunita was enticed in surrending her body for ministerial orgasm. Today and yesterday we heard lot of stories how young sons of Ministers are taking advantage of their fathers' position to exploit sexually innocent young Goan girls. In Goemkar, Rose Ferns depicts how non-Goans whom we call Ghanttis are also using the same "Narvenkarism" to rape young girls. It is at right time both these tiatrists got up to raise very pertinent issue affecting our society. There are many ghanttis naturalised citizens of Goa using our ministers to exploit Goa and Goans. Their presence in Goa and actions are the curses of Goa's liberation. The liberation of Goa brought these curses to Goa and with their influx in Goa from 1961 came their dirty culture, corrupt habbits and prostituted traditions in Goa. I would very much admire all other tiatrists like Prince Jacob and Rose Ferns to rise to the occasion and educate the Goans in political life. Goans are still backward politically for these reasons Goans are electing candidates possessing "Narvenkarism". Without fear the Goan tiatrists must come forward to raise the issues from Stage pertaining to the good of Goans. Tiatrists are in better position to do this and their voices have strong bearing on Goan life. I am sure they will not bow down before the temporary might of the Ministers and fake lolipos the ministers might be offering to them to silence their voices. While tiatirst are doing their revolution, Goan Church must also support them and bring about cleanliness in Goan politics. Like tiatro, Church too can play a wonderful role in bringing about the changes in society. The present political life in Goa is become so corrupt that if nothing is done to change it then "tujem ani mojem Goem gelem Dobean".

A. Veronica Fernandes.
