Hello Borges,

Read your long thesis in two parts on the topic. What you have not mentioned
anywhere in this topic is where Marathi came into existence in Goa. If the
original Konkani was in Devanagri as you say existed in the temples (as far
as I know the religious scriptures of hindus are in sanskrit) which were
destroyed by the Portuguese, and later on Portuguese translated/ wrote some
books in Roman script, than why is Marathi given the equal status in Goa,
which could have been given to Roman Konkani?

The day to day language of Goa is not Devanagri, and its not only with the
minorities. Even those who are educated in Devanagri use Roman konkani in
their conversations. Although in different dialects depending on the area.
It’s a daily language of business by the business community, which are
mostly majority community.

The demand so far has only been to give equal status for Roman Konkani,
especially where grants are concerned, but unfortunately, the matter seems
to go out of hand. If marathi can be given grants why this big neglect for
Roman Konkani, which is a major entertaining source for Goa?

How many tiatrs do take place in Goa? How much tax is collected from these
by the government? What about audio cassettes / Cd’s? all are means of tax
for the government coffers, yet they are reluctant in doing anything for
the Konkani which gets so much revenue. Why this treatment for the Konkani?

Imagine, if this was followed in England, the country which has given the
world English language, than it should have been Queens English, and not the
English which is spoken now, but the world moved ahead, and it has also
accepted so many words from other languages in its vocabulary, and here we
are forced with Konkani which is hardly spoken except on doordarshan.

Cheers

Jerry Fernandes

....The truth is that in the sixteenth century, when Goa was conquered by
the
Portuguese, European missionaries followed them and
began their conversion activity. But they found that
the natives already had a religion with temples and
scriptures of its own. These temples and scriptures
came in the way of their mission of winning souls for
Christ. So they, especially the Jesuits, set about
destroying all the temples and literature. They
instigated the converts to steal written material from
their Hindu neighbours. They also raided private homes
and confiscated any written material found there. All
this material was systematically destroyed.....
