Mr.Alban Couto IAS [Retd] and Mrs. Maria Aurora Couto felicitated Mr. Suresh Amoncar at a well-attended function organised by their home club, the Rotary Club of Mapuca. Since 2003, the Coutos are Honarary members of the Rotary family through the club that has Mr. Suresh Amoncar as its Founder-President and incumbent Director-International Service. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Alban Couto recalled his association with Mr. Amoncar since 1962 for the spread of education and the framing of the Grant-in-Aid Code that lays down the ground rules for funding schools in Goa to this day. It was the transition period in Goa and Portuguese was still a language in common usage. The Indian Administrativ/Civil Service officers were often derisively referred to as " burro-crats" in Goa. In this era, Mr. amoncar played a yeoman role to move things forward, Mr. Couto recalled. Mr. Alban Couto lavished well-deserved praise on Mr.Amoncar. "Suresh-bab is inspired by God and works hard for the work in hand. His maternal uncle, the great poet Baki Bab Borcar, had correctly seen the spark in him" he said referring to Rtn. suresh Amoncar's recounting of the "Dipti" incident at the release function. Mr. Suresh Gundu Amoncar of Dattawadi Mhapsa had the rapt attention of the audience on this occasion as he had at the release function of the Konkanni rendition of the magnum opus Sant Dnyaneshwar's Jnaneshwari at the Kala Academy on 07 November. Dr.Kiran Budkuley had compared the translation of the Jnaneshwari from the ancient Prakrit Marathi to the current Konkani language to the emptying of the ocean into a well. Sant Jnaneshwar wrote the Jnaneshwari when Marathi was still a nascent language 750 years ago. He wanted the wisdom of the Bhagwad Geeta [written exclusively in Sanskrit] to be available in Marathi, the common man's language in his area, Maharashtra. Mr. Amoncar had now extended its access to the Konkani readers. An obviously emotional Mr.Suresh Amoncar spoke as the author of the Jnaneshwari who was moved to do so by his destiny. When such a magnum opus sees the light of day, emotion is but a natural upswell in the human chest. He said that the rendition was not an effort just to build a bridge between two regional languages, Marathi and Konkani, but to bridge the thoughts and hearts of the people who knew these languages. Today, Konkani readers will read an original work from Marathi. Tomorrow, Marathi readers will be able to understand Konkani better. What better thoughts than these when there is a war between the protagnists of the two scripts of just one language, Konkani?? The galaxy of well-known names present on the occasion included Dr. Tanaji Halarkar, former editor of the Konkani Encyclopaedia, Mr. Surendra Sirsat, Principal of DM's PVS Sarojini Kushe HS School, Assagao, former MLA of Mhapsa and Ex-Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly and Mrs.Phyllis Faria, former nominated MLA of the UT of goa,Daman & Diu. Mrs. S.Karpe Headmistress of New Goa High School [ now renamed as "Gundu S.Amoncar Vidya Mandir" ], Mhapsa, and Mr.Jagdish Wagh, former Bureau Chief of UNI in Goa and well-known newspaper columnist, who edited a Souvenir entitled " Shri Jnaneshwar- Shri Jnaneshwari" were present on the occasion. Earlier Rtn.Lucindo Faria welcomed the large number of Rotarians, Inner Wheelers Rotaractors and distinguished invitees. Rtn. Mahendra Gupta introduced the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour while Rtn.Adv.Sharad Rao spoke about the qualities of Rtn.Suresh Amoncar. Rtn. Dilip Salgaocar spoke on behalf of the Rotary family while Rtn.Miguel Braganza proposed the vote of thanks. Rotarians from neighbouring clubs also attended. Rtn.Miguel Braganza Secretary,2005-06
