Cineactor John Abraham has dashed off an impassioned missive to Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane urging him to halt illegal and callous slaughter of pigs in the backyard of the world-renowned tourist state. ''I was shocked and saddened by a video footage shot by tourists, showing the pig slaughter along the Baga-Calangute stretch. Knives are thrust into pigs' hearts, causing the defenceless animals to writhe and scream while desperately gasping for air for many minutes until they die,'' wrote Abraham. He hoped that Mr Rane would assure him of measures taken towards ending this ''clandestine backyard practice.'' The footage that drove Abraham to make a plea on behalf of the animal, was shown by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and is available on www.PETAIndia.com, a release said here today. PETA has been writing to the chief minister and other authorities since September over the issue and a follow-up round was undertaken last month but it elicited no response. Very few people know that the pig is highly social and fascinating animal. They are curious and insightful, and believed to possess intelligence beyond that of an average infant. They are smarter than dogs and every bit as friendly, loyal and affectionate, Peta said. When in their natural surroundings rather than in factory farms, they are social, playful and protective creatures who bond with one another. Pigs lead social lives of a complexity previously observed only in primates, the release added. UNI AC JN GC1940 -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England Comment: I saw this type of incident happening; when I enquired why the killing was not done humanely, I was informed that this is the way that pigs are also killed by the Red necks!
