Re: Uday Bhembre’s Roadmap to Hell
Part XIII

On 5/11 Miguel Braganza wrote:
<<In Romi Lipi Konknni, we are looking at the FUTURE.
It is the language that our children will use to
communicate the stirrings of their heart across the
globe through the internet.>>

By implication, Miguel tries to suggest that
Devanagari is not suitable for FUTURE communication on
the internet. But what about the PRESENT? Devanagari
IS ALREADY IN USE ON THE INTERNET. On the
<rediffmail> portal one can send a message in any
Indian language using its native script. Further, I
invite him to log on to www.avakashvedh.com and he
will find a Marathi site USING DEVANAGARI which
provides a wealth of information about Astronomy. He
could also try www.manogat.com which will open another
Marathi site IN DEVANAGARI on which over 30 stories
are posted everyday; it has also provision for “chat”.
There are many more. Do we have even one portal
which is exclusively Konkani in Roman script?
Further, he wishes that our children will be able to
use Romi Lipi Konkani to communicate the stirrings of
their heart across the globe through the internet.
Fat hopes! When he himself is not able to use this
medium TODAY, how can he be so sure that our children
will even want to use it in the FUTURE? Let him lead
the way. USE IT TODAY!

On 2/11 he wrote:
<< One cannot mark cc to many, and even include
several Net groups [at
least one of which has over 10,000 subscribers
world-wide, many of them not Goans or of Goan origin
or any Asian race, even!], and then command [disguised
as 'request']that no one should "Reply all". That is
patently unfair.>> This was in response to a request
made by Fernando do Rego.

In other words, Miguel felt that once you put a
message in the public domain, you cannot even request
the readers to keep it to themselves. May be he had a
point there. But, at the same time, he also tells
Fernando:
<< You write your Portuguese as you please, and your
English as best as you can, leave Konkani to us that
speak and write the language.>>
Elsewhere (goa-research-net) he wrote:
<< The other point I made in other fora and loops is
that those who know not to read, write or speak Konkani
need not deliberate on it....unless they intend to
learn the language! Why should Pele talk about the
finer points of cricket to a cricket team or Sachin
Tendulkar advise the rugby team on how to play ball?>>
This, by the way, was in reference to a posting on
that forum by Maria Aurora Couto.

One thus sees that Miguel has a penchant for making
Rules for others which he himself will not follow. He
insists on his right to respond to any matter that
comes on any forum but he expects others to
“pre-qualify” before responding. His rules are meant
to shoo off only those who express an opinion contrary
to his. For example, three persons met the President
of India and submitted a petition to grant equal
status to Romi Konkani on par with Devanagari. Of the
three, one had no connection at all with Konkani and
another, though a prolific writer in English, has not
published anything in Romi Konkani. But Miguel had no
objection to these persons being a part of the
delegation; they belonged to the “home” camp, not the
“opposition”!

For the information of readers, I must state that I
have heard Aurora speak in Konkani from a public
platform several times and I have also read at least
one Konkani letter of hers in Sunaparant. But I have
not had any occasion to listen to any Konkani speech
by Miguel. I have read Miguel’s articles but none of
them was in Konkani. If Miguel does not write and
publish in Konkani how can he claim a right to discuss
any matter pertaining to written Konkani i.e. the
script of Konkani? How could he participate in this
debate. More importantly, why is this debate conducted
through the medium of the English language? Why not in
Konkani? To use Miguel’s language, why play football
on a cricket field?
