Goa government moots film festival as a profit centre Raju Nayak Posted online: Friday, November 18, 2005 at 0000 hours IST The government of Goa has mooted several proposals to turn the 36th International Film Festival into a profitable venture. According to Sanjit Rodrigues, CEO, Goa Entertainment Society which is conducting the festival, the emphasis will be on holding the film festival on international lines. On the anvil are initiatives like Film Bazaar where foreign filmmakers can sell their works to Indian audiences. Similarly, Indian filmmakers will also find avenues to sell their works to international exhibitors. "France, Brazil and Latin American filmmakers will have separate pavilions at the Film Bazaar," Rodrigues informs. The French will be well represented with a 15-member delegation. Critically acclaimed international films from Asian, African, European and Latin American countries will be screened along with a number of Indian feature and non-feature films during this mega film festival. In all 200 international and Indian films will be screened during the 11-day period, Rodrigues said. The British film Novel will be premiered at the festival. Film screenings for delegates during IFFI 2005 will be held across four theatres and the majestic 900-seating auditorium at the Kala Academy. Screenings will also be held at public theaters and special open-air locations like the Caranzalem Water Sports Ground which are being dressed up to represent the festival ambience, along with innovative mobile cinema screens which will go across Goa. These have been planned to spice up the festivities during the entire duration of the festival and are a part of the 'Celebrating IFFI Goa 2005' initiative sponsored by Idea Cellular, the numero uno service provider in Maharashtra and Goa. Another major highlight of IFFI 2005 is a selection of Asian, African and Latin American feature films, highlighting the latest cinematic trends from these regions, being screened before a five-member international jury. The main awards which will be presented include Golden Peacock Award for the 'Best Film', Silver Peacock for the Most Promising Director and a 'Special Jury Award' for the Director Of A Film For His Individual Artistic Contribution. The Indian Panorama will have both feature and non-feature film sections with separate juries for both. The feature film jury will recommend two feature films to represent India in the Asian, African and Latin American 'Competition' section. UK-based White Water Films Ltd. and Sujata Films in strategic tie-up UK-based White Water Films Ltd. has signed an agreement with Sujata Films for promoting their Indian operations. White Water Films Ltd. (UK) is offering UK lease back benefits to Indian producers along with a number of incentives for shooting a film in the UK. White Water Films Ltd (WWFL) in association with Sujata Films will guide Indian filmmakers on rules and regulations. It will also provide a one-stop service on sales and lease back help, financial help (conditions apply), visa and ticketing, legal permissions, lodging and boarding, transportation and local transfer, cast and crew, location coordination and management and equipment hire. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes.
