6 Sancoale panchas are migrants With over half of Sancoales population estimated to be from the migrant community, the local Goan community has already reached minority status. In fact, six of the 11 panchas in Sancoale - Jayashree Bhagat, Marati Dessai, Ravindra Dave Gowda, Pramod Devida, Ashok Akki and Laxmi Madiwalkar- are migrants who have settled in Sancoale. The growing presence of the migrant community in Sancoale has evoked mixed opinion among local Goans in the area. No one can stop the migration of people into Sancoale. Even I cant stop it, insists Sancoale Sarpanch Recozino Vales. When asked if the villagers face any threat from the migrant community, he said, No, people from the migrant community are cooperative. According to Albert DCosta, a transport agent in Zuarinagar, the influence of the migrant people in Sancoale is not a problem. They are also Indian, they can also reside anywhere in India and even our Goans have settled in Bombay and other parts of India. But the problem lies in the rapid growing of slums in Samcoale, said Mr. DCosta. When asked if he faced any threat or harassment from the migrant community, he said, No, not at all, I spent 30 years in Zuarinagar and so far, not a single person from the migrant community has misbehaved with me. They respect me and I respect them. Johan Aguri, a building owner, voices a similar opinion, even though he estimates only 5 per cent Goans are in Zuarinagar. The actual troublemakers are politicians and a few migrant people, who have allowed encroachments in Soncoale, he adds. I have not faced any problems with he migrant community. In fact, the labour class migrant people are innocent and cooperative. However, not all locals have welcomed the migrant community with open arms in Sancoale. Hardly 10-12 Goan houses are left in Zuarinagar, which are legal. It is sad that our politicians give first preference to migrant people. It seems that we are in minority and migrant are in majority, said liquor wholesaler and landlord Peter DSouza By Taurappa Lamani.
