General Parveez Musharraf in Kuwait.
General Parveez Musharraf, the leader of Pakistan will be in Kuwait today
3rd and tomorrow on an official visit to Kuwait. I welcome him to Kuwait on
my behalf and all those who whare my thoughts.
Though I am an Indian holding Indian Passport yet take pleasure in saying
that I am from Goa which historically had a very strong link with Pakistan
when Goa was known as Estado de India Portugueza. Pakistan and especially
the City of Karachi still host so many Goans and their Clubs and
Associations. Many of the prominent Goan celebrities and personalities were
born and brought up in Karachi. Many of the Goans during the time of
Portuguese rule in Goa made Karachi as their transit point while travelling
to the Gulf and Portugal. When the Government of India under Nehru's
Congress Party banned the students of St. Josephs High School Arpora, Goa,
from appearing for their Matriculation examination in Bombay and in other
parts of Maharastra because of the pro-Portugueze attitude of the Principal
of that School, Monsg. Philip Neri Mendonca popularly known as Fr. Mendonca,
towards Portugal, the Government of Pakistan came to the rescue of Goan
students and allowed them to appear for their examination in Karachi. In
Kuwait during my long years of
residence I have noticed a very strong bond existing between Pakistanis and
Goans. Lot of marriages in Kuwait are taking place between Goans and
Pakistanis mainly Pakistani citizens of Goan origin. The traces of
historical bond between the two peoples are very much seen in Kuwait.
Gen. Musharraf since taking over the leadership of Pakistan has created
wonderful impact on the relationship between India and Pakistan. His
leaning towards peaceful decisions has helped easing
of tension between India and Pakistan. Some of his friendly decisions taken
for the peaceful coexistence between the two neighbourly countries are so
beneficial for the peoples of both the
countries that the Generals name in the history books will remain carved in
golden letters. No Pakistani leader earlier had guts and wisdom to take
such bold steps in support of good neighbourly
relations between India and Pakistan, as he did, of course part of this
credit should go to Vajpayee and Advani of BJP. While taking so many good
decisions in support of peace between India and
Pakistan he, rightly, always took care of protecting the interest of
Pakistan and thereby gain the confidence of his countrymen. Inspite of
gaining power thru back door he is still popular in Pakistan,
this shows his smartness.
The issue of Kashmir is the big headache for Pakistan and its leaders.
Almost every Pakistani leader for his survival raises the Kashmir issue to
please his people who are not much knowledgeable of
Kashmir issue. Kashmir issue is never going to be settled by Pakistan, it
is a very complex issue. Even the Plebiscite as agreed by UN will not be
possible now because in order to have it the
occupied areas first should be vacated. Who is willing now to vacate from
the already occupied areas? For India to surrender Kashmir in favour of
Pakistan is impossible when India is already on
record to annex to it more neighbouring territories, e.g. Goa and Sikkim
which is termed by the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in his masterpiece If I Am
Assassinated as Indian hegemony. For Kashmiri
freedom fighters to gain control of their land from Indian controlled
Kashmir is next to impossible. Even tomorrow by chance, for example, if
India agrees to vacate from its Kashmiri territories, who will rule Kashmir?
Kashmiris or Pakistanis? Will Kashmir remain sovereign nation or will it
be swallowed by Pakistan in which case will Kashmiris keep silence? Will
Pakistan allow sovereign Kashmir State? There will be nothing but chaos
everywhere and more chaos.
Because of the support of Pakistani Government to the Kashmiri freedom
fighters and their movement, Pakistani attention is simply diverted towards
this issue. This Kashmiri issue makes Pakistan unnecessarily attracted its
attention away from something beneficial for its people and development.
Instead of diverting its attention towards Kashmir issue Gen. Musharraf
should prepare his nation for focusing total attention towards Pakistan and
its people for their
development and betterment. Kashmir issue is a hindrance for the
development of Pakistani people. Pakistan should not pay that much of
importance to this issue by ignoring its own priorities. For India to skip
Indian Kashmir from its control is not a joking matter. If Kashmir is
allowed to secede from India then there is every possibility for other parts
of India to demand cecessation.
As it is India is very fragile as a nation for this reason the powers of
Central Government are stronger. The existing India was brought under one
banner by cohersion and not voluntarily in which case many Indians accept
this India and Indianness out of necessity having no other option. Greater
part of Indians are more regional than national. The Kashmir issue should be
left into the hands of fate and fate alone will decide the future of
Kashmir as fate has decided so many complex issues in the world. Who ever
thought Soviet Russia the mighty super power will disintegrate into pieces
and give way for many of its freedom loving regions and territories to
acquire independence on silver platter? Sometimes Devine punishment can
render punitive actions such as Sunami and Earthquake thru which Kashmir can
get uprooted from its current location and resurface somewhere else thereby
denying the fighting parties their wishes and make them eat humble pie.
Because of one piece of land called Kashmir major wars were fought by India
& Pakistan, enormous resources and precious manpower of both the countries
have been lost. Both these countries do not require wars but peace for
their improvement and prosperity. Gen. Musharraf can become an artichect of
permanent peace between India and Pakistan and for this he can take right
decisions while he is currently enjoying very good rapport with his people.
If there is going to be permanent peace between India and Pakistan, I think
Pakistan alone can play the major role. India is more sober and more
peaceful country and its democratic set-up and democratic tadition will
never allow India to be agressive. Even though India is an atomic power I
feel India is very matured to handle its atomic might. Indian civilian
leadership will alway maintain discipline and Pakistan need not fear of
India's aggressiveness. At moment Hindu fanatics looks like posing threat
to the integrity of Paskistan but Pakistan need not fear for this because
India is not in the hands of Hindu fanatics. Indians are more decent, more
civilized, more secular and more democratic.
