A good friend of mine sent me an exchange of e-mails with Goanet dating back to October 2003, resting with an e-mail dated 05 October 2003 from Fr. J. Loiola Pereira, Archbishop's House, Goa. Refer #1 below: I personally think the confusion stemed from the mis-use of the word Patrao as St. Francis Xavier was known as "Goencho Patrao". (as a matter of fact the landlords were/are addressed as Patrao in Goa) Perhaps, when some Goans translatted the Portuguese word "Patrao" into English they may have ended up in naming him as St. Francis Xavier. Patron Saint of Goa. His feast is celebrated today the 03 December and he is surely our "Goencho Saib", "Goencho Pai" and "Goencho Patrao who is affectionately known among the Goans. And she continues to be so. * Blessed Joseph Vaz -- the first Goan to be beatified --=A0was officially proclaimed the Patron of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman on 16th January, = 2000, and the Indult of the Holy See to that effect was read out during a Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated on that occasion in the Old Goa Cathedral. The Archdiocese, surprisingly, did not have a Patron till that date! * St. Francis Xavier has been, for a long time, acclaimed as the Patron of = Goa by popular devotion. He is the "Goencho Saib" and no one can dethrone him f= rom that niche carved in the hearts of Goans. Recapitulation: The first named is the Patroness of the Cathedral of Goa.=20 The second is the Patron of the Archdiocese of Goa: an ecclesiastical circumscription. The third is the Patron of the People of Goa: a geographical territory with citizens spread around the globe. Fr. J.
