I am also taking the initiative to send this reply of yours to Goanet, as the same article was also published there. You can also express your protest by contacting the editors of Mid-Day at

Dear Tino,

Please be advised that I have sent the following to Midday. Do not know IF it will get posted, but it will certainly get attention.

This note speaks for itself (There is an addendum at the foot of this message)

Why do criminals prefer Portugal?

Dear Mr. Midday editor,

I read that article by Mr. Shankarnarayan and said to myself ..Wow!

Every journalist who writes an article is likely to make an error, typo or two. This article however provides a breath taking amount of errors. It also suggests that the writer rehashed some previously published material with his own ignorance.

Attached herewith are 8 points that Mr. Shankarnarayan may wish to review. You too, Mr. Editor.

If after reviewing these points, you still believe that this is the type of journalism (for want of a better word) Midday wishes to be proud of, Good Wishes from me.

Now: ( C = suggested corrections)

#1 : On 18th December, 1961, the Indian military annexed the then Portuguese occupied areas of the Indian Union,

C1: On 19th December, 1961

#2: The 1975 Portuguese National Law also holds that descendants of those born before 1961, until their third generation, can apply for a VALID Portuguese passport.

C2: Valid as opposed to invalid Portuguese passport? The law is known as the Portuguese Nationality Law

#3: Hence those nationals should be provided with an opportunity to obtain Portuguese citizenship, if THEY declare THEIR intention and register THEIR births and DEATHS at Lisbon.

C3: Register their DEATHS to obtain Portuguese citizenship ?

#4: advocate Mr Gefito Gomindef, who practices in Madgaon Court, Goa

C4: Who is this advocate Mr Gefito Gomindef?

#5: "..the authorities have become stricter and refused to grant visa to genuine citizens.”

C5: I know this is a quote BUT should a journalist worth his salt not know that Citizens do not need VISAS, and that these applicants are NOT applying for a visa.

# 6: This scandal came to light when a certain Mr Nazim Samsudin complained to the officials. Samsudin had applied for Portuguese citizenship in 1998.

C6: This scandal of forgery of Indian documents by Indian officials has been known from the late 1980s. This is why Portugal shut down its Consulate in Bombay and moved it to Goa. It's only that the fraudsters became more ingenious than before.

# 7: Another advantage of Portugal is that it is a country that comes under the Schengen zone. A person with a Schengen visa can move around 15 countries within Europe, virtually without border checks.

C7: How does this become an advantage for someone who does NOT have a genuine passport? He still has to pass Immigration control at the first stop. Abu Salem and Monica Bedi were stopped at Lisbon airport when the passports they presented were identified as being fake.

# 8: So if there are these many reasons to live without having anyone to question your past or present moves, who would not want to head to Portugal?

C8: Why should anyone's past or present moves need to be questioned IF one is not creating any problem for the community; unless one is wanted by Interpol or some for War Crime or fraud ?.

Journalist Devika Sequeira wrote: "Terrorist Masood Azad ... and Abu Salem were both found with Portuguese passports."

Is this true or false? If this is false, Has Devika Sequeira corrected her error?

3.
Some unnamed journalist wrote this:
Ahmedabad, Aug 28 (IANS) At least nine school children died Thursday when a Portuguese-built bridge over a river crashed in the union territory of Daman and Diu, plunging several vehicles into the fast-flowing waters.
http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2003-August/004561.html

Is it true that the bridge which collapsed was built by the Portuguese?

If it was NOT....

Has the journalist and the person who sent it to IANS taken the troble of correcting that error?
