What is VCD ?
(this info mainly for non-asian countries)
Well, 5 years ago, I too thought VCD & DVD one and the same. I really thought in
GOA/India they call it VCD and rest of the world DVD. Based on this I bought 3
in 1 AKAI
System from GOA for Rs.18,000 which had Radio/Sterio, Two Tape Decks & 3in1
VCD/cd/mp3
player where one can insert 3 VCD disc same time. But it would not play my UK
or any
other DVDs. So I bought another one- a DVD Player just to play DVDs.What a
waste of space
(& money)!!
In UK most DVD players play VCDs for this please check the front panel of your
unit where
it is usually says DVD, VCD (OR VIDEO CD), SVCD, Audio CD, MP3, Kodak photo CD,
MPG etc.
Alternately, pl go through you catalogue which came with you DVD player. If
there is no
mention of VCD or VideoCD then it is not likely to play VCDs. However, there
are some
DVD players where there is no 'VCD' mention at all and yet they play VCDs.
Check any Argos Catalogue or other catalogue shopping and open DVD pages and
then its
Specifications where all the abv formats are given to help before buying the
unit.
DVDs are compact/sharp are more clearer. e.g. Long hindi/bollywood movies comes
on two
VCDs but the same is compressed onto just one CD and that's DVD.
Unfortunately, there are no KONKANI DVDs yet.
Stand alone VCD players will not play DVDs and ALL DVD players may not play or
support
VCDs

VCD=Video Compact Disc
VCD is like any other Audio CD
VCD will play on all PCs/Computers with dvd/Combo Drive or on all computers
with a
CD-ROMs/DVD-ROMs
VCD picture quality is same as VHS
VCD can play or hold up to max 90 minutes of film
DVD=Digital Versatile Disc
DVD can play/holds about 3hrs e.g. 2 English Films or one Bollywood film
BTW, did you know in UK there are DVDs which can be played both sides ? Like LP
records.
So, one such DVD means four Movies i.e. two each side
