Goa to keep trophy, AIFF to consult AFC for action against referee

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Dec 18: In a decision likely to irk many football fans in the
state, the All India Football Federation, AIFF has confirmed Goa as the
winner of this year`s Santosh Trophy football championships, while at the
same time deciding to consult the Asian Football Confederation`s referee
committee on the Manipur football association`s complaint against match
officials in the controversial Manipur-Goa quarter-final tie.

The controversy, which had provoked widespread protests in Manipur,
figured prominently in the AIFF`s annual general body meeting, held
yesterday and today at New Delhi. The meet reviewed the video recordings
of the match, apart from listening to comments of the match commissioners,
referee board and disciplinary committee of the tournament.

According to reports received here, after deliberations, the AIFF general
body agreed that the AIFF president, Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, should
consult the Asian Football Confederation`s referee committee on the All
Manipur Football Association`s complaint against the referee who
officiated in the Manipur-Goa quarter-final tie, and take a decision
latest by January 31, 2006

On the other hand, it decided that the results of the 60th Santosh Trophy
championships should not be altered, and the winner shall not be
questioned for this honour, thus confirming Goa as the national football
champions.

In a sop to the Manipur team, however, the AIFF decided not to impose any
penalty against any state player, including, apparently, the four players
against whom disciplinary action were supposed to be taken for protesting
the referee`s controversial decision in the Manipur Goa tie that led to
Manipur`s quarter final ouster from the tournament.

The AGM also agreed that the `All Manipur Football Association shall not
face any difficulty in any national tournament` and that All Manipur
Football Association players should resume their activities, including
participation in all competitions.

L Ranjit Roy, secretary, AMFA, participated in the AIFF annual general
body meeting.

In the meantime, AMFA sources in Imphal indicated that the football
association would hold an executive body meeting on December 20 to decide
on the stance to adopt regarding today`s decision.

Panaji | December 19, 2005 7:46:15 PM IST

Defending champions Salgaocar Sports club and Vasco sports club played out
a goaless draw and split the points in the Hutch Goa Professional football
league championship match, played at Duler ground, Mapusa today.

In a dull and drab encounter, though both the teams made some desparate
attempts for the match winner, but no penetrating moves were initiated
from both sides during the major part of the match.

Salgaocar could have won outright had Samson Singh utilised the gilt edged
opportunity before him towards the close of the match.

Now, Salgaocar has 15 points from ten outings while Vasco also has an
equal number of points with one match less.

Salgaocar's Sachin Gawas was today adjudged the man of the match for his
fine performance.
