"Peter Drucker was the man who saw tomorrow" stated Rev. Fr. Romualdo de Souza, Founder of Goa Institute of Management - the Chief Guest for the programme "Peter Drucker - In Memoriam" a tribute to the Father of Modern Management - the late `Peter Drucker' organized by the Department of Commerce, St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, on 15th December, 2005. The half day programme was attended by students of First, Second and Third year B.Com - Business Management. After inaugurating the programme with the traditional lighting of the lamp, the Principal - Prof. Newman Fernandes, welcomed the Chief Guest and keynote speaker for the occasion, Fr. Romualdo and the Chairperson for the Panel Discussion, Mr. M. A. Sundaram, Joint Director of M.E.S. Institute of Management Studies and in keeping with the Xavierian tradition presented them with potted plants. In his welcome address quoting Peter Drucker, the Principal stated that to be efficient and effective one must "Put your resources where you want to get results". Ms. Nafisa Barreto of F.Y.B.Com. introduced the dignitaries on the dais. Ms. Melitta Almeida of T.Y.B.Com. presented an overview of the life of Peter Drucker highlighting areas such as his birth, early life, education, career, his personal life and his personality. Mr. Nigel Alcasoas of T.Y.B.Com traced his career path from the 1920's. He highlighted his significant achievements in the fields of Corporate Management and mentioned some of the many books, articles authored by him. Mr. Herwin Furtado, Lecturer in Commerce talked on MBO as the key concept developed by Peter Drucker and listed some of the other terms coined by him. Ms. Merlyn Pereira of F.Y.B.Com. paid tribute to the `Father of Modern Management' by presenting tributes from Industrialists, Academicians and the World Press. In his keynote address, Rev. Fr. Romualdo de Souza gave an insight into Peter Drucker's life and works, and stressed on their usefulness and application to our life and times. He emphasized that knowledge always grows and impacts our vision and mission. Stressing on the concept of knowledge economy he stated that people are the most important asset of any company as their ideas generate commitment and uniqueness, translating into satisfied customers. Mr. M. A. Sundaram, Management Consultant who carried the Panel Discussion, in his opening remarks stated that Peter Drucker called himself a social ecologist. He stated NGO's need to follow business practices and principles to enthuse people to work for them. They have to be accountable in every respect. In response to some of the queries raised during the panel discussion it was elucidated that Peter Drucker was not a formal management student but that he read, listened and observed and therefrom found the nourishment for his prolific writing. In response to a question about satisfying the customer in the field of education, Fr. Romualdo stated it is essential to define who our customer is but also to keep our focus on our goals and vision.
