Kuwait City, Dec 27:
Inspired by the fighting spirit of hardened warrior Jaime Figuira, G.O.A Maroons ousted a not-so-impressive Bombay Boys in the semi-finals of NYC Rolling Trophy by one goal to none.
Jaime has been a motivating force behind Maroons' success last many years now. Its a pity no youngster in the Maroons squad is able to emulate the aggressive player having little skills but who makes up with his tireless running, tough tackles and hard headers -- the basic qualities to be a good player. Jaime was seen wherever the action was -- winning the ball, attacking and defending.
Bombay Boys created few chances that could be converted into goals. Maroons scored the "winner" through skipper Ian D'Souza from a combined move initiated by Terence Carvalho, Jaime and Jerry D'Souza.
Bombay Boys fought valiantly with Roland Fernandes, Agnelo D' Souza and Prakash Chandimal putting in extra-best efforts to draw level. Five minutes later as Bombay Boys tried and failed to get back into the game, Jaime played a square ball across the face of Bombay Boys penalty area for an unmarked Augustine to set himself with one step and strike. The shot however was gobbled by Bombay Boys keeper Alvito.
Maroons will now meet AVC Overseas Association on Friday to decide the champions of the 16th NYC Rolling Trophy.
AVC Overseas Association v/s Kuwait Goans Association (1-0)
AVC were restricted to few chances by Siemens sponsored Kuwait Goans Association (KGA) in their semi final. KGA matched their seasoned rivals in every department -- with an attacking display -- but somehow a "winner" eluded them.
Kuwait Goans started the game very well with captain Lucian D'Souza impressive in mid-field and a busy frontline with Melvin, Ashton, Caridade and Kevin Vaz seeing plenty of the ball. Surprisingly, the strikers did not create many scoring chances despite excellent approach play.
It was AVC who came close to scoring in the opening minutes of the game when Francis' free-kick hit the cross-bar and rebounded into play.
Edwin Fernandes scored on the run of play with a late second half strike to send AVC into their second consecutive NYC Trophy final. Edwin managed to produce a goal from nothing; he shot across KGA goalkeeper Connie Rodrigues with no back lift or warning for the keeper. The goalkeeper, one of the stars in this tournament, ended the game in emotional tears.
Kuwait Goans pressed forward after conceding the goal leaving only three players at the back but could not create any scoring chance to draw level.
