Ring In the New Year with Old Year Reflections

January 1 is fast approaching, and you know what that means. People will be
vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a
better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better,
etc etc.

The New Year always brings about reflection, not only of where we have been
but also of where we are going. As you step into this year, be bold enough and
daring enough to believe in the abundant good that has been prepared for you.

New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more
importantly, forward to the coming year. It is a time to reflect on the
changes we want or need to make and resolve to follow through on those
changes. It is that time again, when we make New Year Resolutions and then
break them. Most New Year's resolutions, no matter how well intended, are
doomed to fail for one often overlooked reason: they are unlike with our
dreams and values.

What are we going to do this New Year? Have you made a New Year's Resolution?
However, this time of year is a good time to evaluate last year and make some
changes and/or new goals you'd like to accomplish this year.

Whatever you do, wherever you start, make up your mind to go all the way. It
is often said that people fail when they are on the verge of success, a
journey of a thousand miles starts under one's feet, put as much care into the
end as into the beginning and there will be no failure. Go ahead, start, and
resolve to finish it once you've started. That is what a resolution is.

Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of the modern times, it is no wonder
that "enjoying life more" has become a popular resolution in recent years.
Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you
are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to
fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find
education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to
keep. Challenge your mind in the coming year, and your horizons will expand.

Be realistic in attaining your goals. Plan ahead and don't make your
resolution on New Year's Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be
based on your mind-set that particular day. Instead, it should be well planned
before December 31 arrives.

Outline your plan and decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip the
exercise class, or just have one more cigarette. Don't keep your resolution a
secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your
resolve to change yourself for the better. The best case scenario is to find
yourself a friend who shares your New Year's Resolution and motivate each
other.

Reward yourself, but this doesn't mean that if your resolution is to diet you
can eat an entire box of chocolates. Instead, celebrate your success by
treating yourself to something that you enjoy. Keep track of each small
success you make toward reaching your larger goal. Short-term goals are easier
to keep, and small accomplishments will help keep you motivated. Obsessing
over the occasional slip won't help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can
each day, and take them one at a time. Experts say it takes about 21 days for
a new activity, such as exercising, to become a habit, and 6 months for it to
become part of your personality.

Keep trying as if your resolution has totally run out of steam by mid-
February, don't despair. Start over again! There's no reason you can't make
a "New Year's Resolution" any time of year.

Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a
fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down
one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man
gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in
the things that were and are past.
