A non-Christian neighbour of mine wished 'Merry Christmas ' and added that he saw me on the previous night in the Church ground. On enquiring further, he told me he had been attending midnight mass for some years now and he always stood at the end of the ground so that he could watch the whole ceremony. I said, please be frank with me, and tell me what is it that attracts you to midnight mass. Something that may seem simple to you, he said. Feels a kind of joy to be with a congregation of hundreds with hardly an audible whisper and besides, the carols and hymns in the stillness of the night he would not miss for many years to come.
