Statue of Goa's first Opposition leader demanded
------------------------------------------------------------------------
All social and political leaders of Santa Cruz constituency
at a function organised by the Merces Civic and Consumer
Forum demanded that government should install a life-size
statue of their former MLA and the first Opposition leader
of the Goa Legislative Assembly Dr Jack de Sequeira for
his role during the Opinion Poll conducted on January 16,
1967 to decide the fate of Goa in safeguarding the identity
of Goans.
The function was held at the compound of Our Lady of
Merces Church recently The function started with a welcome
dance followed by the felicitation of the 12 prominent citizens
of Merces. Deputy.Speaker Victoria Fernandes, former MLA
Victor Gonsalves, consumer activist Roland Martins,
and Parish Priest Fr Armando DSouza handed over the
awards to Avito Fernandes a Konkani tiatr writer, director
and producer, Domingos Caetano Braganza a famous
musician, Suhas Amonkar a gold winner in football,
Gonsalo Fernandes in volleyball, Minguel Dias and
Joe Mascarenhas Konkani singing, Pandurang Hoble
Marathi stage artist, Vitorino DSouza &
F. X. Constantino Braganza as agriculturists,
Amit V Rivonkar bravery and former judge of Goa
Consumer Redressal Commission, Atanasio Monteiro
were felicitated.
A souvenir was also released by Deputy Speaker dedicated
to the Father of the Opinion Poll Dr Jack De Sequeira for
spearheading the struggle which ultimately defeated the
promergerists forces within Goa.
Forum convenor Eujen Floriano Fernandes speaking on
behalf of forum put forward two main demands of the people
of Santa Cruz constituency and villagers of Merces like
restoration and beautification of Merces medicinal spring
and the erection of life size statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira
and the full fledged football playground for Merces.
Ex MLA Victor Gonsalves reminded the people that he
and J B Gonsalves Panjim MLA raised the issue of
Dr Jack de Siqueira in the Assembly but the government
has failed to act. He said all the successive governments did
not meet the demand of the Goans and feels lots of injustice
have been done to this towering personality. He promised
all his support to the Merces Forum.
Roland Martins felt that the movement should be taken to the
neighbouring villages and requested the villagers to take part
in the gram sabhas to develop their villages.
Fr. Armando De Souza parish priest congratulated the
members of Merces Civic & Consumer Forum as they
were found to be very active and spreading the message
of awareness among the people of Merces and their
willingness to solve various issues of public interest.
The Deputy Speaker complimented the Merces Civic
and Consumer Forum for organizing such a grand
function and promised full co-operation in their future
endeavours.
The resolution passed by the Santa Cruz Village Panchayat
and Merces Village Panchayat for the statue of Dr Sequeira
will be produced to the right authorities.
Earlier Congress I general secretary and consumer activist
Atanasio Monteiro explained the importance of consumer
forums and suggested to the people that consumers should
file the cases for the faulty prices and other faults of the
shop owners fearlessly to safe guard the interest of the
consumers.
In the end a cultural programme was held in Konkani.
Tiatrists H Britton, Sharon Wilmix, Sheik Amir, Socorro
de Santa Cruz, Sonia and John Naz entertained the audience.
