Avelino,
Further to your post, it makes me sad to say that I will only travel Air India if truly desperate. I was forced to do so in April 2005. At Dabolim airport, those at the counter were incredibly unhelpful to even explain something as simple as that my luggage would be transferred (automatically) in Bombay to my on-going London flight. This caused me much anguish on arrival in Bombay because I had no clue as to what happened to my luggage.

From Dabolim to Bombay, I happened to be in the executive class but I was shocked to see a huge amount of the crew's luggage on seats all around the flight cabin. It was not tethered in any way and posed a huge risk to the few passengers in their seats. Any emergency deceleration by the plane could have decapitated a passenger or caused serious injury by the unfastened crew luggage on seats. Needless to say that, this would be against all airline rules. Some of the crew being transferred to catch flights from Bombay could barely get out of their seats as they were so overweight. What they would do in an emergency is anyone's guess.

From Bombay to London we had the most unhelpful and disinterested flight
attendants I have ever encountered in a well travelled career. Moreover, the passengers literally froze in their seats because the cold air from the air conditioning was so intense. Even two flight issue blankets were not enough. I got an awful sore throat and bad cold as a result and had to see a doctor in London.

I had heard horror stories about Air India as you hear about poor countries and their air carriers. But I wonder if anyone really cares about what goes on the non-private aviation sector in India? Is it really true that India is heading towards superpower status with such poor quality service?
How truly sad for a patriotic Indian to have to say the above?
Cornel

MPs concerned about safety at airports

A parliamentary panel Friday expressed concern at poor safety conditions
at India's airports and security in the air, including the use of the
Instrumental Landing Systems for landing aircraft in foggy conditions.

During a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee attached to
the civil aviation ministry, chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Praful
Patel, panel members expressed concern at the poor condition of
airports, especially those at Delhi and Mumbai. MPs from various
parties called for prioritising the process to upgrade the two airports
without further delay.
Dozens of flights have been delayed at the Delhi airport over the past
two weeks, mainly due to the foggy conditions. Following complaints from
travelers, the civil aviation ministry directed airlines to train their
pilots to operate in bad weather.

Though parliament has given the go-ahead for privatising the airports,
the process has run into delay due to questions raised about the process
for selecting private parties who would maintain the airports. The
Mumbai and Delhi airports are in bad shape and need urgent
refurbishment, both in terms of security and safety, the MPs said.

Issues like the shortage of trained personnel, specifically air traffic
control manpower, slow pace of infrastructure development at metro and
non-metro airports and adequate manpower utilization came up during the
meeting.
Officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), while making a
presentation during the meeting, said the organisation's thrust areas
were user-friendly airports and terminals, passenger comforts, better
public relations, and pleasant clean ambience for passengers.

The AAI team also pointed to the need for enhancing air space and
capacity, introducing safety management system in line with standards
set by International Civil Aviation Organisation, enhancing non-traffic
revenue, ground handling services and taking up international
consultancy.(IANS)
