This unusual dialogue has sure "triggered" some nostalgia about the Swahili ballad - "Malaika" (My Angel) and its writer-the late Fadhili Williams. I must also state in no uncertain terms that I was equally impressed with the swift way you all managed to "spit" the various websites one could access on the subject. As stated in my earlier posting, the first rendition by Fadhili and a fair-skinned Kenyan singer - Mona Miller included two English verses on their 45 rpm (extended play) record. I remember the first English verse which is the third after the two Swahili verses that Dominic Fernandes correctly posted. It goes like this:- Malaika, how I love you My Angel, Malaika, when will be to-gether again, Ever since I met you, my heart has been at pain, And if ever you should break my heart, Not you and your Malaika. the second verse begins with Dear Heart, but I do not have the rest of the verse. The original rendition is the only version that includes the English lyrics. I have noted that some people have used the English translation as a way of replacing the Swahili lyrics. Like any language- Swahili notwithstanding- very rarely can the literal translation replace the original lyrics. rgds. Tony Barros.
