The article below makes one wonder why the protection of children are not the # 1 priority of the Goa Government. This is an old issue that still has yet to be dealt with. Instead of simply inaugurating the Children Film Festival in Goa today, Rane should use the event as a platform to announce a stiff policy of ensuring the safety and security of our beloved children.

News Title: "Delhi, Goa major human trafficking destinations" (Source:siliconindia.com)

NEW DELHI: Besides being the political capital, New Delhi now has another claim to fame. The city has the highest incident of trafficking of women and children, majority of whom are sexually exploited, a nationwide study said

New Delhi-based Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) brought out the first-ever survey, titled “Trafficking of Women and Children in India.” Conducted over a period of 2 years in 12 Indian states, the study interviewed over 4,000 respondents, including 160 traffickers, 412 brothel owners, 582 clients and 929 victims of commercial sex exploitation (CSE).

The study highlights the fact that human trafficking is a borderless crime involving the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.

While Delhi and Goa lead in the inter-state trafficking rate, Andhra Pradesh tops the list of the "source" states.

Police records since 1999 shows that 31 percent of the victims rescued from brothels in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are of Nepalese origin with a high rate of Bangladeshi girls in Kolkata.

The study revealed the growing instance of sex tourism. It also said the factors responsible for the growing phenomenon of child sex tourism include the anonymity of tourists, easy access to trafficked children and lack of interest shown by law enforcement agencies.
