Hi Cecil
The 'grip' my grandmother talked about was the pandemic which swept the
world around the time of WW1. I don't have the time to check the actual
dates for now. However, I recall my grandmother describing the absolute fear
of that plague in Goa when she was a young child-bearing mother. The young
children were apparently swathed in onion-based home remedies to ward off
the deadly 'grip'. How I wish I had made notes of what she had said. We now
think that the 'grip' was a form of deadly bird flu. I have recently heard
that somewhere in Greenland or so, buried bodies are being exumed to find
the virus which killed millions but about which little was then known.
I'd be interested in hearing more on this thread.

"China gripped by Bird Flu", "Delhi gripped by cold"... these are the
headlines we read in the papers the last few days.
On Monday, January 9th, the weather here in Goa changed drastically from
the winter cold to April-like heat and humidity. Yesterday, 11th January
night, it seems to have returned to what it should be at this time of the
year. The meteorological department confirms that this was strange
un-seasonal weather was due to some low pressure being formed in the
Indian Ocean
Many people fell mildly sick in Goa due to the abrupt shift in weather.
Most Konkani speaking people I spoke to said they had a case of 'grip'.
Now 'grip', from what I can figure, is a mild sickness whose symptoms are
a strange mix of a body cold (as opposed to head or chest cold), light
fever, low blood pressure, drowsiness, bodyache and mild rheumatism. In
retrospect I now see that I have been gripped by 'grip' in the past too
and did not recognise it as such.
Will some doctor on this forum, or some folk medicine expert, please
clarify if 'grip' is just a local name for an existing disease or is it a
uniquely Goan disease?
Cheers!
Cecil
