PANJIM, JAN 13 - The imbroglio over Panjim's solid waste continues with residents of Curca today foiling plans of the Corporation of the city of Panjim that proposed to transport a part of its wet waste for the purpose of treating the same at Curca this morning. The CCP decided to execute the High Court orders on Friday morning after a meeting late last night and had sought police protection fearing an angry outburst from the locals. However, alert residents of Curca gathered at the site on Thursday night and kept vigil till Friday noon preparing to block CCP vehicles that were scheduled to arrive at the site at 11 am. On receipt of the said information, the CCP suspended its plans immediately. The local MLA Francis Silveira was learnt to have sought government intervention to stop the CCP from executing its plans today. It is also learnt that the CCP while expressing helplessness in finding short term and long term solutions to the problems were suggested to dispose its waste at the Campal Parade grounds. The CCP administrator Sanjit Rodrigues when contacted by Herald said that it has no intentions of creating a law and order crisis at Curca. He said, "we were directed by the High Court to rehabilitate the site which we have completed in two phases and all arrangements have been set for treating solid waste through composting stations at Curca". "We just want to utilize this site as a temporary arrangement till our long term plans for solid waste management takes shape". "We intend to use Curca only for some breathing space till our permanent arrangements fall into place," he said. Rodrigues explained that until the CCP was given some temporary alternative, plans for permanent solutions may not progress. He pointed out to a systematic plan chalked out by the CCP for setting up composting stations at 173 locations within the CCP jurisdiction. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Goa - 2005 Santosh Trophy Champions | | | | Support Soccer Activities at the grassroots in our villages | | Vacationing in Goa this year-end - Carry and distribute Soccer Balls | --------------------------------------------------------------------------
