While recently in Goa I was sold a book called "The Parish Churches of Goa - A study of facade architecture" written by Jose Lourenco with photographs by Pantaleao Fernandes. Although initially a reluctant purchaser (I was given the hard sell by Cecil Pinto and succumbed just to shut him up) I am delighted with this beautiful book. Not only does it show lovely pictures of many of the churches in Goa it also gives the history and main architectural styles and influences of each. Since I really enjoy cycling the roads and lanes of Goa I actually spent the latter part of my stay looking for some of the Salcette churches in the book. When I first came to Goa I thought all the churches were very similar in style but this book is an eye-opener in the subtle and not so subtle differences. It has certainly made me look at them in a new light. If you are an NRG and long for a reminder of the predominant architectural structures in Goa or even if you are lucky enough to be still living in Goa and cannot think of a gift for a friend, I would highly recommend this lovely book. If like me you are a Goan wannabe, then this book is definitely one for the coffee table or better again the bathroom where you have time to peruse it. At 495 rupees it's a steal particularly when you see the quality of the pictures. So for once Cecil was right though it pains me to say that as I will never hear the end of it.
