The Maharashtra Government's politically motivated
ordinance attempting to regularise the illegalities at
Ulhasnagar and trying to stall the Bombay High Court's
directed demolitions is high handed and has to be
highlighted as it tries to circumvent the rule of law.

Everyone sympathises with the residents of Ulhasnagar
because their hard earned money has been invested in
these buildings which were illegally built with
political patronage, but the law of our land has to
prevail and be upheld.

Both Chief Minister Vilasrao Deskmukh for proposing
the ordinance and Governor Somanahalli Mallaiah
Krishna for having hesitantly signed it, have to be
rapped hard enough on their knuckles.

In times when politicians are exceeding their powers,
the independence of the judiciary is of paramount
importance and in no way should it be allowed to be
subordinate to the executive or legislature.

Today had it not been for a vigilant and pro active
judiciary, Lalu and Pappu Yadav's lawlessness would
have engulfed from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Will the Ulhasnagar demolitions act as a deterrent to
organised illegal constructions? Only time will tell.
It is only then that Prime Minister Dr Manmohansingh's
dream of turning Mumbai into Shanghai may have a hope.
