DAB - Digital Audio Broadcasting devices are different from FM Radios and supposedly have superior quality audio.....Most regular radio stations in Europe also transmit in DAB in "Free to Air" format (subscription-free) within a specific range. Here is a report on the status of DAB (end-2005). Appears India is testing DAB too. http://www.worlddab.org/images/WorldDAB-roundup.pdf On the FM Radio front......there appears to be a deluge of FM stations slated to begin tranmitting in India - 337 !! http://www.digitalmediaasia.com/default.asp?ArticleID=12397 Satellite Radio on the other hand seems to be the in-thing for 2006 in North America. XM Radio (http://www.xmradio.com/) and Sirius Sat Radio (http://www.sirius.com) are the two largest providers in North America that have ratcheted-up the subscriber base in the last few weeks by strengthening their programming line-ups that include shock-jock Howard Stern. These services have a monthly charge and are not "Free to Air" transmissions. It appears people are now willing to pay to listen to radio. WorldSpace Radio (http://www.worldspace.com/) is the provider in Asia and Africa....and I think FN wrote a letter to WorldSpace some months ago, requesting for a Konkani music channel transmission albeit the economics may not tie-up just yet. In terms of what is available in India....surf the site or maybe contact them. Appears subscriber-based ($$$) commercial-free Satellite Radio is here !!! Will it stay ??? Aslo, if one can listen to it in India and Goa especially? I do have a Satellite Radio. When I had bought it, it was free reception to various music stations and news, but now its pay to listen. I would appreciate if some one can share some insight on DAB RADIO.
